So my friend recently bought a cheap R9 285 and installed it into his computer , it worked fine but after he bought it home , it crashed and windows said its a 'video_tdr_failure' . I put the graphics card into my own system and it came up with the same error , i didnt change any parts , just the r9 285. I have no idea how to fix it i've been trying for 2 hours but cant seem to figure it out :/.. anyone else experienced this problem before ? if so how did you solve it ? Thanks for viewing , any help is appreciated :)

It could be several things, like wrong drivers installed, overheating, or damage to the components on the card.

I'm going to assume that it isn't the drivers, so the next step would be to monitor the temps until it bsods. If the temps are high, give the cooler a good cleaning and/or reapply the thermal paste.

If the temps are ok, then inspect the card looking for signs of damage, like cracks, burn/scorch marks (especially around the pcie plug) blown caps etc. You may need to take the cooler off but before you do, make sure that you won't be voiding the warranty.

Good luck sorting this out.

I know the temps are ridiculously high on his system , im talking like 87C IDLE on our first boot . But i dont get it , how does high temps result in a video_tdr_failure?

also i dont think its the drivers tho , after formatting and reinstalling the os , it blues creened right as i was installing the OS 。 Also the video card works tho , theres video output , could it still be blown caps?

If the temps are crazy high at idle, the problem is likely temps. It's bsoding because the card is running too hot and likely downclocks itself too much and becomes unstable causing the error.

Double check the temps. If it is idling at 87°C then the card won't last long. The gpu might be fried already causing those errors.

You can check for blown caps if you want, but the problem right now is the temps. Clean the cooler and reapply thermal paste and go from there.

whoops sorry for the misinformation , 87C is the cpu , gpu is 30c idle . But they work though , it does have display output. also ive alr checked , theres no display output,.

Could be a small crack in the pcb or solder work, could be damage to the gpu itself. If it's not the driver, and it isn't the temps, there's probably a bit of damage somewhere that's causing it. You said you reinstalled the os so it isn't caused by bad/corrupt files. There isn't much more you can do.

Did he buy it from a retailer or used? Is it still under warranty?

so it could be hardware and not software by the looks of it? cause this whole time i thought it was a software issue

You said that you formatted and reinstalled windows and it blue screened during the reinstall. That rules out software. The problem is hardware, likely a small crack in the pcb traces or soldering. Could be a burnt out vrm (doubt it though), or the gpu itself.

No problem. Good luck. If you don't get the refund, perhaps an electronic technician could repair it, assuming it is the processor itself that's the problem.
