Also when installing directly from nvidia, the driver install doesn't even pass the system check. And also when attempting to install the 32 bit version it says the graphics card isn't compatible either.

I did a little digging on Reddit for you and found something posted by someone called "FailsTheTuringTest" that may actually solve your problem, though it doesn't look like it'll be very straightforward.

I have Windows 10 Education and recently got a 1070. I went through a bit of an ordeal to install the drivers. Let me give you a tip: Before you do anything, do the following:

  • Press WIN + R to open a Run dialog
  • Type "winver", Enter.

If version is Version 1511 (OS Build 10576.29), you should be good.

If version is Build 10240, driver installation will fail, so don't do anything with the video cards yet. Apparently with Education, Windows Update won't always grab big updates like version 1511 automatically, because it's considered an Enterprise edition, and these updates are supposed to be handled through your organization. Problem is, most people who got Windows 10 from DreamSpark or whatever aren't actually going to set up Group Policy and all that shit to connect to an enterprise network. So to get this to work, you need to download an updated ISO and update from that, and the standard (Home/Pro) media creation tool will not work for this. Get the academic one here and have it download an ISO. When downloaded, double click the ISO to mount it, double click setup.exe, and follow the prompts to "upgrade this PC now". This will take an absurdly long time (half an hour, I think?) and will require multiple reboots. Once this update is installed, you can go through the standard DDU->shut down->install video card->start up procedure and you should be good.

Hope this will help some folks avoid the nasty troubleshooting I had to go through. The exact error message I was getting was "This NVIDIA graphics driver is not compatible with this version of Windows", and it took me hours to figure out what the hell was going on. nVidia support wasn't any help either, but I told them what I did to fix it, so hopefully they'll be more helpful to the next guy if someone goes that route.

I just got a brand new gtx 1070 today and already had a 750ti installed in my system previously. Everything worked perfectly fine and everything was up to date, but ever since installing the card neither windows or geforce experience can install the driver. Windows runs into an "unexpected problem" saying the card is a GTX 1070 and geforce experience says my version of windows 10 isn't supported... I have a valid copy of win 10 education 64 bit which is basically Pro/enterprise (I tried both 64 and 32 bit). I have already reformatted my OS and the problem still prevails. In device manager the card shows up as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" saying the device is functioning properly. The card is functioning at 100% it seems, so how do I get around this software wise?

TL;DR geforce drivers aren't installing because my version of windows 10 isn't recognized even though it's legit

Are you on the latest version of Windows 10?

I sure am. Updated and restarted my PC like 5 times after reinstalling windows. Perfect clean slate and these drivers won't install

Stop using GFE? That can solve a world of problems.

The only things you need to install from Nvidia is the graphics driver and PhysX.

Uninstall old drivers with DDU and then grab 369.09.

369.09 is only available from Windows Update because of the Anniversary Update so Nvidia for whatever reason not wanting it accessible to those without it, so they haven't put it up for manual download on their site.

You can download it directly from Microsoft however from here http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2016/08/20907805_f44d993a4269ca64c6cbf10ab7ec27a0231161e1.cab

Then just get PhysX from here http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.16.0318-driver.html

For whatever reason Nvidia didn't include PhysX with the 369.09 driver package...

Do a custom clean install of 369.09 and uncheck everything except the graphics driver, which cannot be unchecked anyway.

Then install PhsyX.

Then never install anything but the driver and PhsyX from Nvidia ever again and you're good.

Run CCleaner occasionally too.

Thank you both of you so much!!! In the end I had to go the route of installing the new build of win 10 education, but I'm sure the other method suggested would've worked just as well or faster if my build of windows wasn't so outdated lol
