I am trying to build a PC for Minecraft, Virtualbox, audio editing, and maybe a little video editing. I know the power supply is overkill, but it's cheaper than one of a lower capacity one. PCPartPicker link: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/FFz8M8 I Will be okay with onboard graphics until I have enough money for a GPU.

If you're gonna be running virtualBox often, I highly recommend a better CPU (graphics cards are also important,so get one ASAP).

Otherwise, I think that your system is good overall; you've got workable components and a good upgrade path.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

I just need Virtualbox for running old versions of Windows, I can tell it wont be hard to run because an old PC with an athlon xp 3200+ and chipset graphics can run it.

Sorry, well then you'll be fine. I was thinking of worst case scenario e.g. running multiple copies of Windows 10

If you need to do virtual machine work an FX 8 core is going to be pretty solid for you

Or are you just using some small simple programs in the VMs?

how much of the focus is on VM work?

My suggestion anyways if you need a more workstation type PC and don't want to go used

although I'd probably suggest you get a used GPU of some kind instead of the thing here which is really only good for outputting to a display

Although more cores are useful, OP has already stated the he would be fine with 4 for what he does. An i3 would be better here because it has an upgrade path to an i5 or even i7 when he has the money to do so.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

That build seems really nice, but as i am using this pc mainly for minecraft, would this build be good for that too?

VM shit, like it's the last thing AMD is good for, and how long would the upgrade take? because Zen might be out by then, or intel's new platform, which might end up with a motherboard upgrade anyways

guess you would need DDR4 as well, but then you have the 8 core to be a work horse secondary PC

Minecraft is a pretty seemingly poorly optimized game I think, but it should be fine on nearly anything

I take it SEUS is some kind of graphical mod?

just look for more minecraft CPU benchmarks

-

-

does minecraft really only use 1 thread? in any case, just about any intel CPU will be 40-50% faster in it, but in that video at least it seems to run fine on the FX chip

there's a mod to use more threads I guess, I knew it was built poorly, but I didn't think it was built that poorly

yes SEUS is a shader pack, which adds things like shadows, and waving leaves, and optifine is a mod that enhances performance

He might have been using the multi-threaded mod in the video, but ya, should be fine overall and be way better for VM work

didn't answer what kind of VM work you do though

Oh ya, I am doing light VM work, but a pc that lets me do some more heavy VM work would be nice! Also, is that hard drive a good choice? As I am going to need to move around a lot large os files.

Hard drive would be your best choice. This is because if you wanted 1TB (or any other significant size in storage), while SSDs would be faster, they cost a lot more than Hard Drives. As this is a budget build, I highly recommend Hard Drives.

Proof:

1TB SSDs: ~$300 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226596,

you might want to invest in a slightly better MoBo, for as graphics cards tend to sag A bit on that one.
