I'm installing windows 7 on a machine that I had to use the ssd from for a little bit and I just want to make sure that Windows update is actually doing something.  It will use like 50Kb/s of my connection in 1 second intervals every two minutes or so.  Is this actually doing something or should I fix that?  Thanks.

i don't know. but I would seek out the SP and install it before I went to updates to save some time............ then I would worry about how many days it's going to take to update because microsoft has everything screwed up on purpose.

If you haven't installed it already, you can actually include all the updates into the installation media. Windows update is buggy on win7, especially if it is a fresh install. If you are thinking windows update is not working properly, you can always check what it is (trying to) do.

Right sorry the installation media included SP1.  And yeah it seems that way, thanks.

I've tried to make an iso with the updates included but I did it wrong and didn't try again but that is probably the way to go.  Anyways where is information of what windows update is doing?

This method works: https://www.raymond.cc/blog/create-an-integrated-up-to-date-windows-7-install-disc/

You can find windows update in the control panel, or just search for windows update in the start menu search bar. It will show if it is checking for updates, installing them, or just sitting there waiting for you to click something. For me it says 62 optional updates available.

I think Microsoft has released a Windows 7 image with all updates up to something like fall 2016 already installed. If you only want updates up to before Microsoft back-added telemetry to Windows 7, then you'll want either a June or July 2015 ISO image.

You can find updated Win 7 ISOs available with a google search. If you have Windows 7 Ultimate, and want a June 2015 updated ISO, I can give you a link for one (it doesn't include any key or activation tools, and you'll need your own license for it).

That Microsoft updated 7 image sounds great but I think one of the times I called for help reinstalling (before windows 10, after a hardware upgrade) the Korean tech support changed my product key to only be eligible to download the Korean version of Windows.  I think my only option is to manually create an updated image using the steps in this link:

However, thanks for input and I hope this thread can help people.
