Hello all, I am new here and I registered here seeking for help.

I am a noob about PC building and all but I am trying my best to make up for my lack of knowledge. So here's what I want to ask for help:

My PC build was an old one updating once in a while when my budget permits me to upgrade some parts. My specs are Intel Core2Quad Q8400 not OC'd; 4GB DDR2 RAM, ECS g31t-m7 motherboard; and 2 years ago, I had the chance to buy an ASUS GTX 560ti Direct CU II Top to replace my 9500GT graphics card. Sadly, my GTX560ti died about a month ago. I am now looking for a replacement for my Graphics Card.

But I am stuck in a slump. Due to the past experiences I had with Nvidia, I am either appalled or feeling so unfortunate that my graphics card died first rather than the rest of my build. I see that Radeon seems better at Frame rates but I don't know if the lack of PhysX with Radeon will generally make my experience quite different from what I used to. Since I chose Geforce over Radeon before because of PhysX, will the lack of it make my gaming experience worse or will I not notice any difference at all? And the price of a new Graphics Card that I can afford is around 250USD -- that's about a 7870 or a GTX 760. I don't know what to get and I'm so sad that a faulty Nvidia Driver caused my Card to die. :(

Thanks for the help.

tl;dr

7870 or GTX 760?

7870 or 7950 i recommend

Console optimisations and how they will effect you | The difference between AMD cores and Intel cores | Memory Bus size and how it effects your VRAM usage |
How much vram do you actually need? | APUs and the future of processing | Projects: SO - here

Intel i7 5820l @ with Corsair H110 | 32GB DDR4 RAM @ 1600Mhz | XFX Radeon R9 290 @ 1.2Ghz | Corsair 600Q | Corsair TX650 | Probably too much corsair but meh should have had a Corsair SSD and RAM | 1.3TB HDD Space | Sennheiser HD598 | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro | Blue Snowball

PhysX only matters in a game that actually uses PhysX, like Borderlands 2. You can run PhysX off of your CPU but I've heard it isn't quite as good, I haven't tested it myself because I really have no reason to with my setup. A GTX 760 would suit you just fine btw and is a good choice for the money.

Even so on Borderlands 2, Physx tends to tank the FPS in certain areas that utilize Phys x well, by all means he can use it, but for Me on my 660 @ 1280 x 1024 I was experiencing quite heavy drops due to Phys x, hence why I turned it off.

I don't get drops on a single 660 Ti at 1920x1080, I can't believe that you get them at 1280x1024. I thought the 660 was stronger than that.

As I've said mate, depends on the specific area, guess I ran into an area on the game where it tanked hard due to a lot of low flowing water around, may have been the Bloodshot stronghold, around 3/4 the way through.

The 9xxx series is just a reboot of the 7xxx series with a new expensive top card. Get a 760 or a 7950 now. I have had no bad experiences with nvidia although i have had 3 amd cards die in three years. Its luck of the draw really.

Weird, I was tanking from around 80-120 Solid (Capped myself at 120) and I was jumping around 45-55 during that specific area, saying that mate, do you still play? :LL

I cap at 60fps so maybe that's why, and I haven't played for ages. Cloud save killed 5 high lv characters and I just haven't found the motivation to play since because of it.

I have a few characters but I think my highest is a lv 37 mech, it got the the point where I thought. "wait why am I playing this when it might just kill my save again" so I haven't touched it since, been a few months now I think.

Yea I'm just currently doing Mech at Lv72 with the 2 DLC upgrade packs, the raids a bitch to do as it burns through my ammo completely.

Easy fix, get some super powers somehow and learn how to channel your rage into code and turn it into bullets, then just rage hard and bam infinite bullets, problem solved.

Is there any bottleneck issues I should be worried about due to my old processor?

I don't know... When I usually upgrade I do everything in one, just coz... hmmm I don't think it will be too severe.

Yes you will be bottlenecking the 760/7950. I would go nvidia by my experiences.
