GTX 1080 ROG Problem, HELP!!!

Hello guys,

recently I built my first gaming PC and because I had to wait for my GTX 1080 ROG to be delivered. I used to play with integrated graphics from my i7-6700K. It could run LoL on high, a few other games and even GTA V 720p somewhat on high. I mean I had no problem. Then before three days my GPU got delivered and I was excited ofc but on the next day when I started to play GTA V it continued for only 5 minutes or so becuse my pc turned off. First I thought it's because I installed some mods I could've got some viruses and so I tried reseting my PC and I lost a lot of time doing so. After I clean installed Windows I tried to see if the problem is going to stay and yes my PC turned off again! Then I started monitoring my GPU and I saw that on 50C fans still weren't spinning and the it got to somewhere ~55C and my PC  automatically turns off. I checked the ROG software and everything was on auto. I thought it should do it's thing on it's own when on auto but no, the fans weren't spinning. It activates it's boost clock but it wont spin the fans. I tried to put the fans to stay on 70% even when idle but whenever the GPU gets to 55C it just turns my PC off. Like I don't know what to do, I literally got a gaming PC only because of GTA and I can't play it! I know here may not be the place but I just dont understand how everything with the official ASUS site works, it's really complicated. I beg you guys for help I can't get sleep bacause of this.

P.S. sry if there are any typos, english is not my native language.

Newer cards have a feature where fans do not spin up until 60c. IF your PC is crashing, it actually sounds like your PSU cant handle the graphics card and is shutting itself down and rebooting you because of it. What is your PSU?

Do you or maybe a friend have a GPU in a computer that you could perhaps use? If yes, you could try swapping the 1080 with that other GPU and see if you have any problems.

Also, just wanted to make sure but you have the 8 pin pcie plugs plugged into the GPU, right?

if its freezing and not doing anything, are you overclocking your card? if so, dial it back a bit. if not, try underclocking it to see if it continues. If it continues, then sounds like a bad GPU then.

That sucks... I don't know for sure if you can do this, but go ahead and try it anyways: Go and download MSI afterburner here: http://download.msi.com/uti_exe/vga/MSIAfterburnerSetup.zip

and see if it lets you lower the power limit. If it does, try lowering it by a good amount and then running. If it still freezes or doesn't let you do that, change the power limit back to normal and then try lowering the core clock of your GPU by a few hundred MHz.

I haven't touched the clock even a bit. In fact I don't allow for the GPU tho boost clock itself.

If it freezes every time the GPU hits 55C and you can duplicate that over and over, I would say its time to call ASUS tech support.  You would probably need to RMA.

Sorry for the delay for my reply, but it looks like I just found your problem!

A month or so back I saw some news about some of the GTX 1080 strix OC edition GPUs having issues where they would freeze and stuff. This seemed to be because of something Nvidia did with pascal that made it harder to bin GPUs so some of the GPUs that asus thought were good enough for the OC edition actually weren't so the GPU would end up boosting very high but not having enough voltage to sustain the boost. Because of that, the GPU would lock up.

It seems to me this is the exact problem you are having-once the GPU gets under load and warms up it boosts very high but doesn't have enough voltage to sustain the boost and then it locks up. That explains why you don't have that problem while on your desktop or for the first few minutes of gameplay.

As far as I see it you have 3 options:

  1. You could return the card and get a new one as long as you bought the card within the past 30 days. Only downside is you'll have to spend another week or two on your iGPU. Shipping is free though. However, by doing this you risk having your next card also have the same issue.
  2. You could download MSI afterburner and lower the core clock of your GPU buy 50-100 MHz. Most likely you won't see the issue anymore if you do that, though your performance will go down slightly too. EDIT: Also thought of another option you could choose if you want to reduce the core clock. Go into your ROG software and change the mode from OC mode to Gaming mode. That should fix it too, though your performance will go down slightly. If it's already on gaming mode, then you will have to follow option 2.
  3. You could download MSI afterburner and increase the voltage for your card by 20 mV or so. Like option 2, this would most likely get rid of the issue for you but if you choose this option your card will also be a little more powerful than if you choose option 2. However, chances are this will void your warranty.

These are the options I believe you have. Whichever you choose, if you have any more problems you can PM me or post another thread on this forum. Good luck!

EDIT: I'm not sure if you can get a refund on it and buy a different card. What retailer did you buy your GPU from?

I live in Germany and I bought it from Mindfactory.de and I can return it. I really don't want to do the 3rd option because it's my first build PC etc. and I don't really understand it so I'm afraid I'll void the warranty. I'm thinking of returning the 1080 and getting a 980ti from MSI, I'm really not sure if it's going to have the same problem.

EDIT: I tried doing the second option without a success

I live in Germany and I bought it from Mindfactory.de and I can return it. I really don't want to do the 3rd option because it's my first build PC etc. and I don't really understand it so I'm afraid I'll void the warranty. I'm thinking of returning the 1080 and getting a 980ti from MSI, I'm really not sure if it's going to have the same problem.

EDIT: I tried doing the second option without a success

You could try lowering the clock even more and switching to gaming mode. If that really doesn't work I guess you'll have to return it. If a 1070 isn't much more expensive than a 980 ti though you should get the 1070; otherwise the 980 ti is still a very good card. You shouldn't have the same problem again though.

Good luck!

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

Good luck!

I tried to lower the clock as low as possible but it still froze,

Also I have a few more questions: Is this issue only with the GTX 1080 ROG or the all the ROG from the 10 series?

If you were me, would you buy the 980Ti or the 1070?(Price doesn't matter)

If I get the 1070 will the issue be gone?

Should I get FE or it is ok to get an MSI, Windforce etc.
