Hey community,

In about a month I`m planning to do a monitor upgrade and sell the one that I`m using now.

My eye was on the Acer Predator x34 100hz, but I`m not sure if that is the best option and would love to hear your opinions on it! IPS would be great since I`m working a lot with computer graphics. I run two 980 watercooled and overclocked and also game a lot. (basically this PC runs all day, work and play)

Thank you so much for taking the time reading and responding.

Alex

Hi there,

I'm going to get the LG 34UC88 in a couple of weeks (https://www.amazon.com/LG-34UC88-B-34-Inch-21-UltraWide/dp/B01B9IDL4I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1470406332&sr=8-1&keywords=lg+34uc88)

It's Freesync, so it wouldn't be as good for you because of the two 980s, but in my opinion the X34 Predator is just too expensive. I don't have any previous experience with ultrawide monitors, but I think it's a great option.

I too would strongly recommend the LG 34UC88. Not really any known issues, and great quality panel.

@vojta.pokorny and @maxvons Thanks so much for the recommendations!

G-sync would be great to have, and the panel seems to be high quality from the reviews I saw for the LG 34UC88. My only gripe is the refresh rate, for the last like 4 years i`ve been accustomed to over 100 hz(I had a samsung with 120hz and now own a swift with 144 hz), and I sit 8-12 hours in front of the pc every day (with some brakes.. I don`t wanna die at 35, haha). And I`m afraid that 75 would really affect me(I know it`s sad, but...).

Is there any other option? Should I wait for a new display that`s been announced? If anyone knows about announcements or has been following display release schedules.

Thanks so much,

Alex

I know about some 1440p 165hz 24" monitors coming soon. Also some new ultra wides from Samsung and AU Optronics. If you don't want to wait, get the LG 34UC88C

Thank you @maxvons !

Since I`m buying the new monitor in about less than a month, any other suggestions? Or insight if I should wait for a early or late Q4 release?

Thanks!

Alex

I would just go with the LG 34UC88. There's nothing huge coming out this year really.

One thing I should mention is that you're limited to 60Hz on the 34UC88 if you have a nvidia card.

Not necessarily, I am actually buying this exact screen and one of my issues was with the refresh rate. You can overclock this monitor and it seems like most people who have done so, have gotten low 70hz consistently, and stable, with some reporting ober 80hz. And its not difficult to overclock it either, from what ive read and watched.

Also I do recommend the 34UC88 as it has a panel in it about a year newer than most if not all other ultrawides out there, such as the Predator x34 you suggested, which actually uses the panel from a dell u3415w, which if I remember correctly is a panel from 2014 or early 2015

I've heard about frame skipping issues when doing that tho

Yea I have heard of people having that issue as well, but I'm unsure of how bad it is as some reviewers say its horrible and others dont even mention it, so I'll have to do it myself, do some benchmarking and see how it turns out, I'm just excited to be getting the screen, I should have it this Friday.

I'm getting mine today. Both excited and worried about problems.

ah cool, let me know if you do anything and how it goes, I plan on overclocking the monitor.

I think I'll skip the OC part. Maybe later if I like the monitor. I have a Spyder 5 Pro coming too. So I'll probably calibrate it myself and upload a profile if you want.

@arrowman1256 and @maxvons thanks so much!

Please let me know how the monitor behaves and if you are having problems / if you can get it to over 70hz :)

That is literally my only concern for the 34UC88, the refresh rate...

Take care,

Alex

Crap. Got the monitor. Set it up and used it for a while. I got the issue I feared was gonna be present. More green tint on the left and red on the right. Very minor, but still. Also there was some weird very faint lighter vertical stripe on the left side. Best visible on a grey background. Was very, very faint.

Not it sure if I'm keeping this one. I'm not that much of a power user in order to justify the price when it's not perfect.

I don't understand why my Asus VS24AH-P is so perfect. Makes everything seem like it has issues.

My last hope for a monitor without any issues would be the Eizo CS270. Actually think I'm gonna get it just as a last resort, and if it's not good. I'm just keeping and using my old Asus VS24AH-P.

Don't let this scare you away from the LG 34UC88 though! I'm extremely picky about these things. You probably won't notice or care about anything I just mentioned

@maxvons Thanks! Oh I do see all the problems and do care, since I`ll be using it mainly for work( 3d graphic design) and gaming. Colors are extremely important for me, so having a gradient on it is a big no no. And as stated, I`ll be using it all day since I work from home (about 8-14 hours a day) so having a fault will probably resolve in either punching through it or throwing it out the window after a few days, haha.

Your monitor could end up not having any of the issues i just described. I think I've only seen two other complaints about the green/red tint difference

Okay so I did get mine, I haven't noticed any issues with color difference though im sure its because im just not quite as savvy to it. However I was able to get my monitor to OC stable at 75HZ, I am also able to get it to 80HZ however when I ran benchmarks it would crash. Also I will report that there is minor frame skipping at 75HZ but I haven't used it outside of benchmarks to know how bad it is in practical use. Overall I am happy with it so far.

I got mine last weekend as well, aaand my biggest complaint is that LG doesn't include the USB cable for the uplink to the USB hub on the monitor :-D

Oh and also that I only have an r9 280 atm, that's definitely not fine.
