Dual display setup w/ different resolutions

Hi guys, would gladly appreciate some feedback regarding my dual display setup.

I'm currently using dual BenQ XL2720Z (1080p, TN, 144hz) on a PC with a GTX 980. My ASUS OC STRIX GTX 1070 is 2-3 days away from arriving and will replace my 980. I currently play WoW/Overwatch on my 980 and I get over 100 frames with high settings(with some tweaks I easily get 144fps on overwatch). Now, if that's what my 980 can do, the 1070 can definetly do WAY more and I feel using a 1080p monitor with the 1070 will be a waste of the GPU's true potential.

Now BenQ has a monitor that is 1440p, the BenQ XL2730Z. It literally has the same buttons/same size/same logo placement etc etc, the only difference being the resolution. I'm thinking of using it instead of one of my 1080p monitors and keeping the other 1080p on the right. This would be great for gaming and I'm sure I can still get 144FPS on the 1440p with high settings and it would also be amazing for WoW(seeing as how bad the quality of their graphics engine is, the sharper the pixels would be the better I think).

So the left monitor would be the 1440p for gaming mainly while the right monitor will be the 1080p version for twitter/youtube/teamspeak etc etc.

What kind of problems am I expected to have with two monitors side by side that have different resolutions? What should I expect and is it a good idea?

Thanks in advance, Saif.

If I understand you correctly, you currently keep both screens separate (i.e., you don't have the game displayed as if you had an ultra wide screen, only full screen in one monitor). In that case, I don't think it matters how similar the screens are. I currently have a 1920x1200 Dell as main screen, an a 1920x1080 Asus on the side - which is actually 1080x1920, as it only fits vertically in my desk. I game on the Dell, I keep temp monitors and stuff like that on the Asus. No issues I can think of.

Yes, I only game on a single monitor. So it doesn't feel weird having two different resolutions side by side? Like because of the different symmetry and stuff?

Well, how it feels is a subjective matter - only you will know :) As I said, in my case it's not just the resolution: one is 24'', 1920x1200, horizontal, the other is 21.5'' 1920x1080, vertical. For me, one is the actual screen, the other is a sideshow for monitoring and auxiliary stuff I want to have visible while doing something else in the main screen.

In your case, maybe you were aiming at a more seamless experience of having a single, very wide desktop. That may change once you use two different resolutions, but I can't say much about it as it's not what I aim for.
