Hey all I need some help deciding which graphics card best suits my first PC build:

i5 6500

16 GB 2400 RAM

120gb SSD

1 TB HDD

550W PSU

MSI Z170A mobo

Also I have a 29" monitor with free sync so I was thinking maybe the 480 would be better for me but I am leaning more towards the NVIDIA side with the 1060.

My budget is capped at $300 for the card. Would freesync really make that much of a difference? Thanks for any recommendations you can make.

Freesync tends to be cheaper, which means you end up spending less on your monitor. Alot less. The 480 and 1060 themselves are pretty similar and neck in neck, so your call on which. Just make sure you get an AIB version. What 550W PSU specifically BTW?

Yes either one is great.  1060 is a bit more expensive and seems to be a bit faster, but the 480 will give you freesync and save a few bucks.  I would go for the 480.  Freesync is awesome.

Do the benefits of free sync outweigh the greater speed of the 1060?

Yes, and the 1060 and 480 already trade blows as to which is faster. The 1060 is just faster over all. But depending on the games you play one will offer more performance. But it's worth it to go with the 480 so as to be able to use the Freesync.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

The 1060 is better than the 480, albeit by not that much, and works with gsync, which tends to cost quite a chunk more. The 480 is a bit behind the 1060, and works with freesync, which is much cheaper. Far cheaper. ($100-ish cheaper in some cases.) If money is a factor, then freesync /w 480 is the answer.

Nothing.
