The plants in front are pretty blown up but you can't really save them. So a crop would fix that. Other then that looks good.

Looks pretty good, where you shooting RAW by any chance? If you do it gives you a lot more latitude for fixing mistakes. 

 

If you want to keep playing with it, I would suggest pulling the highlights bar down a little, and the shadows up a bit.

Assuming you were trying to use a longish exposure to get the movement of the waterfall, there's a couple of things you can try, using a smaller aperture if you are not already at your smallest (f32 for example), back off the the exposure time a little bit, or come back at a time when it's a bit darker, ie dusk/dawn.

 

The other option is ND filters, but that requires spending $.

An image that was badly composed from the beginning, will remain a badly composed image... without serious photoshopping, if it can be salvaged at all.  There are a few rules or guidelines with photography that you should follow:

  1. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)
  2. and the ever popular Rule of Thirds (or other rules about composition).  Until you actually master this rule, regardless of what others say about breaking rules, you are NOT ready to break this rule or any other rule about composition.

Here are the problems that exist with your composition:

  • The overblown grass in the foreground bottom area, this seems to be an unnecessary and distracting element.
  • The taller grass on the right side of the frame, they are competing for attention with the rocks and the flowing water.
  • The slab of rock where the water is flowing from, it looks to be slanted.  I think it would look better if it were horizontally level.  Also, if your intention is to focus the viewers' (our) attention on the "waterfall", I think the image would look better if it were placed at a third along at least one axis of the image, or you zoom in closer so that it fills up more of the frame.
  • The less dense blades of grass in front of the water, they are also elements competing for attention.
  • The trees in the background, a shallower DOF would be nice so that they are more blurry.
  • Sunlight can be both a friend and an enemy.  It's quality changes with time of day, where usually the best times are early morning and late afternoon.  Noon time sun is usually considered harsh by many photographers.

As for the editing and recovery of the image, I assume you took this photo with your D70.  Did you capture it as a Nikon RAW image or as a JPEG out of the camera?  While RAW does give you a certain degree of latitude over JPEG when editing the image, the D70 itself is limited in Dynamic Range compared to more modern cameras which tend to have 10-14 stops of DR.  Because of this, you need to make sure that the exposure is more optimal first in-camera.  I doubt even highlight and exposure recovery in LR would be able to help much in the case of your photo.  You can see on the rocks above the flowing water, where the highlights are so overblown that texture detail is completely lost.

 

 

With photography, one of the first things I learned is the fact that when looking at images our eyes are immediately drawn towards:

  • people
  • bright colors
  • warm tones
  • sharp areas
  • diagonal lines
  • recognizable elements
  • high contrast
  • things that dominate the composition
