6600k Overclocking problems

Hey guys,

So I am trying to overclock my 6600k with hyper 212 evo and a gigabyte z170 hd3p mobo using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and I ran into a problem. The benchmark at stock showed 1048 marks. After that, i got into basic tuning and upped the multiplier so that the core and cache should've reached 4.00ghz. So, the cache did that, however, the cpu locks itself at around 3.89ghz. Dropped cache to 3.80 instead of 4.00 and same result. Upped both at 4.20ghz and still 3.89ghz. Any advice?

What is your voltage?

 

Also, leave cache stock while you're changing the multiplier for cores. Do cache after you've done the rest.

Havent touched voltage so that is stock... Also noticed that it thinks that my 1070 has 4gb of vram...

Mine said that too for a little bit. Check in GPU-Z.

 

Try increasing your voltage to 1.325 and see if it helps. That should be a safe level and should allow multiplier over 40 easily.

my 8350 does this all time and it seems to be due to the front side bus dropping below 200mhz (100 on intel).

ohh wait, could it be the turboboost speed im changing? And I want to use the basic tuning first before fiddling with advanced tuning with voltages and per-core multipliers

You could be very well increasing the turbo rather than base clock.

You should only be overclocking with your bios. Use a program such as HWMonitor along with prime95 to stress test your cpu.

Use the BIOS. It's the most failsafe way - if you really mess up, you just reset it to default and voila you're fixed (most of the time).

 

Basically I'd recommend BIOS, but if you really want software then Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) works well.

Set voltage to manual mode and type in 1.325. Then increase the CPU core multiplier to 4.3 or whatever (that should work, you can raise this and/or lower voltage later).

 

Test using AIDA64 or Prime 95 - be careful with prime though, it can overheat too much. Have CPU-Z open to watch the clock speed/temps.

You know, that's a pretty high voltage for a hyper 212. That cooler isn't as good as people think. I wouldn't recommend going with that straight away. Rather, OP should start at something lower (say, 1.25) and work his way up.

I didn't know that - haven't ever used one myself, just assumed it worked as well as everyone says. Good to know!
