3 people 1 CPU

Furryfoxes

I have no idea, where to post this, I am essentially doing the 7 gamers 1 cpu system, but I only  need it for 3 people, not gamers people, I need help what software was used, where are some good guides for this type of system, how seemless will it be?

Software: https://lime-technology.com/

(FreeNAS or unRaid, Linus did the video on unRaid though)

Hardware: Depends on the usage. Go for an 8 core CPU (hyperthreaded) and give everyone 4 cores, doesn't matter if they are real or "fake" cores,, and give the unRaid client however many cores you feel needed. (And enough PCIe lanes to run 4 GPUs)

Ram... A LOT. Give each OS 8 Gigs (generously) so I would say 24Gigs should be good. But 32 will be the f word. (futureproof)

Video cards. You are going to need 4, one for the unRaid client, and one for each VM you plan to run (each one has to be different)

If these people won't be gaming, a 660, a 660Ti, a 710, and 750 should be sufficient (that was not saying "Go for this" that was "here's an example for what you could do")

Motherboard: Lots of USB ports, ram slots (for enough ram, obviously), and at least 4 PCIe 16x slots. (with your CPU to handle all of those PCIe lanes)

Storage: Depends on the user. I vote SSDs, to keep the system fast and quiet.

He shows you how to set it up the software used.

Here is unRAID: https://lime-technology.com/

thank you, quick question on this as well. with a budget of $7000 would you do 1 computer, or 3 computers. they will live on a server rack in our closet.

basically, we will need to shove parts for 3 systems in 1 case? but only 1 CPU and mobo?

For the server experience, one pc.

If you do 3 computers, the performance will not be different. VMs do not show any performance drops.

Basically yes.

OH I FORGOT. You need a CPU that supports virtualization.

From what I understand X99 CPU's will be compatible, this is my current mock up

You will need 4 GPUs.

I haven't updated it yet, so the R9 nano and some like 460's I feel will be efficient

I would do 3 computers. $7000 is plenty!

so like $1000 for the 2 small ones, and maybe $2500 for the big guy, put the rest into the other server parts.

Keep in mind that you need to find 3 4u atx board and power supply compatible rack mount cases. Also, check if all of your parts would fit in a 4u before you buy them.

So, will one VM be for gaming? Or is everything just productivity in like word?

An R9 Nano would be overkill for that. And each GPU needs to be different.

1 VM he insists will not be used for gaming, but I want it to play games, because when he decides to play a game he will be pissed.

Okay. You could go for an RX 460 when it comes out for something.

Also, for better drive performance, get a separate drive for each VM. So when two people write/read at once, it doesn't take forever.

All your peripherals need to be different (monitors don't count in this)

How does this mock-up sound?

Why would the GPU's/peripherals need to be different, without re-watching Linus's video, I'm pretty sure all the GPU's where the same.

Not to be rude,

They had an 8800GS, Titan X (reference), and 980 Ti (reference)

Also, all the peripherals were different.

The video I watched had 7 of the exact same single slot AMD GPU (can't watch these right now to confirm sorry)

I think it's easier to configure with separate GPUs.
