Installing Windows 7 With New HDD

okay so in the near future i am going to be getting a new version of windows 7 (because mines not genuine!!) and a new hard drive. Im just curious on how to install it on my current desktop.

do i just unplug everything from my computer and pull out my hard drive and install the new one and insert the windows 7 disk once i plug everything back in?

or do i need to do another approach to this..

my friend told me all i had to do was insert windows 7 disk and follow the instructions once i install the harddrive. so is he right? im kinda confused and i dont want to mess this all up!

When the computer turns on, you will see some thing flash on the bottom left corner of the screen - click XX for boot menu, XX for bios. Hit whatever button brings you to the boot menu. Boot into the windows installation media, and follow instructions from there. That's about all there is to it.
