Next-Gen VRam Requirements

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

VRAM is required to store textures. At higher resolutions, the textures become higher in resolution, taking up more VRAM space. Textures are made up of pixels. Don't believe me? In a shooter, get really close to an object and zoom in on it. It'll be pixelated. Only upgrade your graphics card if you feel it's needed.

Also, anti-aliasing takes up more VRAM as well.

I've been hearing a lot about how next-gen games are going to require a graphics card with 2/3 or more gb's of Vram. Is this just for the textures or is this just for playing at higher resolutions?

And so, if I stick with my 1440 x 900 monitor for the "next" generation, will I have to upgrade my 7770 to the new 260X?

I still won't, but I want to know if I have to :)

I'd say 2Gb will be the bare minimum for running games on 1440p, in high/very high details. 3Gb isn't too much, that's why it's cool that it is included in some of AMD's highest end card (ex: 7950, 7970, R9-280X, etc). The 2Gb of a GTX770 will be enough, I don't think that it's necesseray to pay like 50-60$ more to get a 4Gb edition, unless you plan to get another monitor and stuff like that.

Wow, you didn't really read that did you? 1440x900 so 900p, and 7770 by AMD.

Oh ok, so this means the lower the resolution the less VRAM it needs?

Oops, I read that too quickly. OK, my comment doesn't apply to you OP, sorry! :P

lol, its fine :)

High resolutions and AA levels tend to need more VRAM as well.

That is correct. I will add that. I already mentioned resolutions as well.
