I'm building a Plex machine and I'm not entirely sure if I need to get another HDD to boot from, but I don't think I do. I have a 1.5 TB external HDD. Would I be able to add a 20 GB partition with its free space, assign a drive letter to it, and then install Windows to that new partition and boot from it without ever having to format my drive?

I'm fairly certain I can, but I want to make sure. Thanks.

Yeah, but if it's already allocated it won't allow you to partition another 20gb or so.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

You sure? I just used Computer Management to shrink my current volume and added unallocated space. It was previously one partition with no unallocated space.

EDIT:

Created a new partition with a drive letter without problems

Thanks for letting me know this method will work.
