Which CPU is better?

TBH I'd go with the Pentium. It's really not terrible for gaming - can play decent settings with something like a RX 480. Can also look at G3258 even though it's last gen - it's actually pretty popular.

By the way. I'm going to be using mainly Linux on this build. In a windows/Linux dual boot.

The intel is so much new so yeah that one, also I have had that a6 and it's fine as well but only if you can get it a lot cheaper would I recommend it.

I'd still stick with Pentium. OS shouldn't affect CPU choice too much honestly.

well that board only supports the Pentium so its your only choice here lol, would have voted Pentium any day of the weak anyway because of upgradability in the future because AMD you can go up a bit but you get SO MUCH MORE with an I5 then a FX 8xxx for about the same price

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

The G3258 is a really great overclocker. You do need the 1150 board though. And of course that means you can upgrade to a 4690k/4790k later if you want to.

I don't think that they have separate backup cores perse but they are better overall lol.

If you're going to OC you need a Z chipset, not B or H. Something like this would work :).

Here's a synthetic benchmark comparison between the 2 processors you were looking at and also a AMD A8-7600, which goes for about $10 more than the Pentium but is also quad core and has a bit higher performance.

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-G3258-vs-AMD-A8-7650K-APU/2434vsm27184

This site says the Pentium G3258 still outperforms a nicer A8 than that one :).
