I recently lost my gaming rig I built about 8 months ago due to the sad passing of my dad's prebuilt. He decided to take my PC, using the i5 4690k and the gtx 970 in my build to run Microsoft outlook and occasionally use chrome.

He's given me $700 in compensation, and I've dug up around $600 of my own savings to build a new rig. I'd appreciate any recommendations or tips that people have into making a cost efficient build with my given budget.

I've come up with a rough build so far:

(I'd like to make a color themed build, probably black/red (yes, yes, its edgy af I know)

Please note price is set in C.A.R.s, (Canadian rupee)

cpu:i5 6600k <- already purchased                                            -$315

cpu cooler: CM 212 evo                                                             - $40 (if there's a sale)

gpu: (insert manufacturer) r9 480                                              -$300

psu: RIP i know nothing about psu's, send help

mobo: MSI b150 m3                                                                  -$150

ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws V series 16gbs ddr4 2400                  -$90 when on sale

fans: Already covered, I have like 8 lying around in my basement

case: NZXT noctis 450                                                             -$160

storage: pre-existing drives from old rig

audio: some old speakers from the basement (for now)

peripherals: mouse: idk

keyboard: the edgy Corsair k70 (mx blues)              -$115 when on sale

monitors: 2 ASUS 60hz VS228NL-P's                                       (Already Covered)

I've already accounted for taxes and such, with backup money I've reserved specifically for that purpose. This leaves about $100 for psu and mouse, which haven't been selected yet.

Any help is greatly appreciated. And please tell me if i made any mistakes in putting this in the right section etc. Thanks :)

  • Could he not just build his own with that money? Get a nuc or a cheap prebuilt for him and get your good rig back.
  • Why would you already buy a 6600k?
  • http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/ is your friend
  • You probably don't need 16GB ram for that budget
  • If you're on a budget for peripherals try this Tomoko mechanical keyboard, my friend loves his.
  • I think a black/red S340 might be better visually and for your budget.
  • It's a shame no Canada sellers have the Cryorig H7, looks and performs a lot better than the 212 Evo. Not a bad choice though.
  • If you're planning on overclocking (which you should be since you got a K processor) you need a Z170 mobo
  • 500-600W PSU will power this fine, CXM 550W is a good choice (not the last gen CX 500W, that thing is terrible)

My dad doesn't know what a cpu is xd. For the record, the 6600k was actually cheaper than the non-k at the time. Thanks for the feedback though :) will have to seriously consider all these. ( I really like the noctis, but am also considering the S340 and the H440)

A 6500 would be a good option for non-overclocking, but it is what it is. PM me if you have any more questions.

um if your dad doesn't know what a cpu is Im pretty sure he doesn't need that gtx 970... Just snatch the 970 when he is not home LMFAO he won't be able to tell the difference considering he is clearly not a gaming enthusiast.

xD problem is, that 970 is shining green light out of the side panel of my case, he doesn't know computers, but he can notice flashy green lights.

I'm glad my father has at least an old computer background. he still doesn't understand some new things tho. He says water cooling is "overkill' and "nobody does it".He also thinks noone could ever use up a Tb drive and its "overkill". lol

Lol lucky you. To be fair, i personally only need 500gb, 1tb is very nice to have. Watercooling though.... who doesn't want watercooling.

I have a 500gb as well. but if I were doing video editing, or lots of gaming, that wouldn't be enough. But then, look at my build.

But that looks like a solid build for what you paid for!

I myself didn't pay anything originally. My father bought it for our family, probably in the area of $150. They are basically old workstation PCs. Lots on the refurb market these days.

Well seeing as I'm less of a gamer and more of a tinkerer, it works. Plus it's cheap enough that if I destroy it somehow, I can technically get a replacement. Technically.

And dealing with even older, more dysfunctionally outdated computers in my spare time gives me some perspective and appreciation on what we have these days.
