I got a new CPU and went to install it, and now lights and fans come on for 0.5 seconds before shutting down. Now, I've been searching for answers and most other cases was a fried CPU due to lack of Thermal Paste. But there is no way that can happen after 0.5 seconds. (To my knowledge)

Would love some help on this.

Unplug everything except cpu, gpu (if you have one), and one stick of ram. Try the ram in each slot. Did you not put thermal paste on?

Also, put the old cpu back in and try it. If it works, it's probably the cpu doa and you should RMA it.

Dead RAM, try reinstalling the RAM, clearing the CMOS etc.

Not if the fans just spin for half a second. It sounds like the 4770k i bought on ebay that was doa. That's exactly what mine would do.

Op, does the motherboard have a Debug led?

You mean leds on different parts of the motherboard to show errors? Yes, but only the green 'good to go' led lights up.

I meant a readout display like this one

Did you try just one stick of ram in each slot, and if it doesn't work, the other stick of ram in each slot?

THERMAL PASTE, there is a reason why it is there, try putting some on the cpu, and see if that works.

it shouldn't overheat after 0.5s.

Most likely the OP is repeatidly trying to start the computer and the heat has nowhere to go.

No, it is a Z87-A.

Moving the RAM around did not fix it.

any Beeping sounds?

is your motherboard capable of beeping without a CPU?

I'm pretty sure it uses 4-5 red leds if there are errors, none of them lit up. Only the green led is on.

I put in the stock cooler in, which  had thermal paste pre-applied. (In neat little geometric shapes too) Still does the .5 sec then shutdown.

Do you have another cpu to test the mobo? It sounds just like the 4770k i had that was doa. Everything would spin/flash for a second and then shut off.

Clear CMOS.

First step to every post problem. Plug everything in, then clear CMOS.

I had this happen and had to RMA the motherboard, but in the long run I think it was actually my PSU. The first board was just not a high quality specimen of the product and therefor the tolerances the second did handle for some time, the first could not.

It is the new i7-4790k and the old i5-4670k. Happens with both of them. I should note that it does not shut down without a CPU installed.

Are you sure you have the right bios to run the 4790K on the z87 board?  Although, it should run the 4670k no problem...Can you get into the bios with no cpu?

If i'm understanding correctly, the computer was running fine with a 4670k. You bought a 4790k and installed it, and it wouldn't post.  You tried reintstalling the 4670K, and now it doesn't work either? Is this correct?   When you pull the processor out of the socket, are there any bent pins inside?  And yes, definitely clear the cmos.

Spoiler

Turns out a pin was bent. Now the weird thing is that it was like that as I removed the CPU, so I just went ahead. Guessing  the removal bent it just enough to cause a short.

I was about to admit defeat and bring it to a PC repair shop, but I am not the one to stop before all options have been tried. So I got my screwdriver and got to work. And now it's running again.

Now, I'll postpone the upgrade until I've got two things sorted out.

1. More thermal paste, as the pre-applied was on the stock cooler and not the CPU itself.

2. Getting an actual workbench to work on, with proper lighting. The floor + bad lighting + hair that gets in the way all the time.

See, I KNEW it couldn't have fried itself.

Anyway, thanks for all the help. Linus wasn't kidding when he said the forum's got you covered. Now if you'll excuse me. I need some rest because that was nerve-wracking.
