So this is a build including a trip to microcenter and getting a CPU/Motherboard combo. It would be a long drive (over 2 hours drive, 2 hours back) and I would have to leave a little early from work. Do you think this would be worth it?

the 8320E will be better than an i3, but absolutely no upgrade path whatsoever. i'd go with an i3 or an i5 instead.

If i were you i'd spend just a little more on the gpu. You als don't have a pc that you can upgrade later on in terms of cpu power. I'd say go intel, and get like an entry level i3 (or maybe an entry level i5)

I5 4440//8gb Corsair Vengeance ddr3//Sapphire Radeon r9 380 4gb//ASUS h81m-plus//WD caviar blue 1tb//Cooler Master N200//Cooler Master G500

I looked up some benchmarks and in most games the i3 6100 will outperform the 8 core amd cpu's.

I do realise that this is a little over 500, and that it doesnt have windows, but you'll just have to save up longer for windows and use linux in the meantime, otherwise I dont think you can get very good performance in games. However, if you arent thinking about gaming then you could actually go a little cheaper on the parts.

the fx 8300 is better in DX12 rise of the tomb raider, cities skylines, GTA 5 and dying light while the i3 wins in DX11 rise of the tomb raider and COD:BO3.

And dont forget about those games with no optimization, Dark Souls barely runs at all on the AMD fx 8350 Dolphin barely runs on the fx 8350, and also, most games will run better on the I3, you just chose the select few that actually dont.

No, the fx wont perform as good as the I3 in games, if you're looking to do rendering than yes, maybe.

An i3 build would cost around 50 dollars more, which is out of the 500 dollar strict client budget. It would be mainly for light gaming and mostly office work.

The client does not want to upgrade for a while, so a locked upgrade path is fine.

Like I said, an i3 is definitely out of budget unless I can buy one for 70 dollars.

This is way over budget lol. I have 500 dollars of cash from my client to spend, not a cent more.

With the windows licence, it would be over 550 dollars, way over budget. There will be no parts upgraded for the life of this computer.

Well I'm guessing he wont be doing much gaming then, the original build is fine.

He is going to be doing moderate gaming, but he understands the performance for the price. I'm looking to maximize performance for the 500 dollars I can spend on it.

You can get a 30 dollar discount on microcenter if you bundle the mobo with the I3, and overall it'll be about the same price, and better performance in most games.

Those are grey market keys that I can't sell to a customer. I am required to buy a physical media and give them the disk/key.

AMD combo is $110, and Intel combo is $150. FX 6300 and i3's are closely similar for basic performance, and each share blows in games.

EDIT: I can remove the AMD aftermarket cooler if I get an i3, reducing the price to the same:

Yes that looks good to me, you dont really need an aftermarket cooler on an I3 since you cant overclock it.
