Ultra m.2 is faster standard so if you plug ultra m.2 ssd into m.2 slot it will slow down a bit (how much depends on the actual ssd). And SSDs in general are nice to have for gaming cos it improves ur loading time but it won't improve ur fps so it's more of a luxury purchase than a necessity.

Thanks for replying! So which is better? Getting a m.2 or a 2.5 ssd?

m.2 is faster than SATA so it's better but also more expensive. If you buy ultra m.2 mobo it will further improve ur performance but it's an improvement made by asrock so I'm pretty sure there are only a few mobos out there with ultra m.2 and all of them from asrock so it severely limits ur options if you decide to buy one.

All in all I don't think m.2 is something that's really useful for anyone since SSDs based on SATA are good enough. m.2 is an enthusiast grade gear.

M.2 usually uses either SATA or PCIe. On Z97, given the limited lanes from the CPU, the M.2 connector usually takes lanes from the chipset, giving you PCIe 2.0 x2, which is roughly a quarter the bandwidth most PCIe SSD's are designed to run on with PCIe 3.0 x4. Ultra-M.2 is just a marketing name for M.2 that uses PCIe 3.0 x4 from the CPU.

PCIe SSD's are much faster than SATA SSD's, but not in a way that matters for most of us. You won't get noticeable improvements in load times or anything.

Best just to get a 2.5" SSD.

"Do as I say, not as I do."
