I am thinking on returning my evga gtx 1070 ftw to microcenter. It is a great card but my particular one has coil whine. But the biggest issue is that my I5-4590 is seriously bottlenecking it as I have a 144hz monitor. I'm not getting the framerates I should be. Now I have a few options. I can return it and buy a 4790k for 280 or a 4790 for 250. I can return it and buy a 6700k for 310 or 6700 for 280 and a 100 dollar mobo after the 30 dollar combo deal plus 30 for 8 gigs ram. Or a 5820k for 310 with a 170 dollar mobo after the deal. I am thinking the best option is to do one of those options then when I get back from vacation in a few weeks I can see if the 1070, 1060, or 480 prices have settled at all. A little info on my current build. I have an asus z97a. 32gigs ram(my friend gave me ik this much isn't needed, evga g2 550. Dark rock pro 3. Which one of these is the best option? And aren't the 6700 and 4790 somehow overclockable even though they aren't k versions? I've read such conflicting viewpoints on all of this so I would appreciate the guidance

I could grab the 5820k and an open box mobo for 150 idk. There's a lot of options. 5820k and a gtx 1060 will probably serve me better than a 1070 and 4590. And after I sell my current parts I will barely even be paying mote

It sucks how hard my 4590 is dying with my new monitor. When I first built the PC people told me a 4590 wouldn't bottleneck 3 980tis and it's just simply not true

In the end it's up to you.

I would recommend the 5820K for the better upgrade options from X99 later on.

X99 will be used for awhile?

I'd get the 4790k. You don't have to upgrade your platform and it is only within 5% of the 6700k.

280 just seems steep for a processor that's like 3 generations old

From what I've heard yeah, supposedly LGA 1151 wont give you as many options as X99/LGA 2011(-3) will.

And a 5820k will be much less if any of a bottleneck on a 1070 right? Is a open box mobo worth it? And is 16gigs ram worth it over 8 at this point

Overclocking non K chip is pointless ! They run at 4Ghz anyway and such frequency with 4790 or 6700 will not hold u back in any game atm.

Since u want to OC so badly u think of OCing a nonK chip, just make yourself a favour and buy K chip ;)

It's hard to decide between 4790k and 6700k considering the price bump. There is like 1-2 fps difference between them... There are other advantages to Skylake but it's really up to you to make the research and decide if it's worth the money.

I'm quiet sad i5 is bottlenecking 1070.

Idc about overclocking that much. I just want the CPU to keep up with 144hz

I Think the 4770K runs hot, dunno about 4790K. But yes upgrade path is basically nonexistant there.

For some reason the second part of my post didn't come out;

The 5820K Will not bottleneck on any level, even if it's the lower tier of the X99 platform CPU's it's still on par with the 6700K and beats it in multi core processing and beats it in future upgrades. 8 RAM slots are damn sweet to have as well.

There just seems to not be a ton of mobo options. Would you go with a Asus x99e, msi sli krait, or asrock extreme 4. I wanna oc high as balls. I already have a dark rock pro 3 so cooling isn't an issue

Well just about any MOBO will work in that case, pick the one that suits your needs. I'm on the X99-s and feel like it has waaaay more than I actually use. All X99 mobos are really good, check for reviews about specific ones you're interested in, I must say I'm not very updated on the X99 side of things.
