Hello, I need help troubleshooting my CPU cooling fan. It seems like my CPU is running extremely hot at idle (50-60C). I was wondering if there were any software programs I can use to diagnose issues if any. If not is there a way of testing it without pulling my laptop apart, as I've already done this once and don't particularly care to do it again. I have listed both the CPU and GPU, they are both connected to the same heat sink and fan on this laptop.

HP Pavilion dv6t-6100 Quad

Processor: Mobile Quad Core Intel i7-2630QM

GPU:AMD Radeon HD 6490M

Right I mean I have a desktop also, and admittedly I haven't used this laptop in about 2 years, which was well before I became more tech savvy, but I just find it really hard to think that, 1. A non-overclocked CPU would run at 60C idle with any type of ventilation and 2. That a manufacturer would build a laptop which its intended to run that hot (besides apple and that uni-body crap).

And nah, I used to use this thing for gaming before I built my rig, cant imagine the laptop liked gaming too much, ill leave gaming and CPU intensive stuff to my desktop lol.

Also part of the reason im posting this is because I replaced the fan recently, as its why I stopped using the laptop all together and im unsure if it is working, thought it was at first but not so sure now

If you replaced the CPU fan yourself its hard to tell weather its normal or not, if you dont have temperatures to refear to before you did replace the fan.

However as others allready stated, 50°C is quite normal for a laptop.

The Intel I7 4510U on my laptop also always jumps around in the 50°C area, lowest I've ever seen it was like 46°, with 22°C ambient and highest in Idle 55°C. Under constant load, even while having the CPU & GPU stressed simultaniously, it does not go above 85°C however and still stays boosted by +300-500mhz.

Laptops dont have hughe heatsinks, so they need a high fan rpm to keep cool.

Ofc if your PC is not doing anything, it will lower its fan speed and hence increase the temps. Because quite frankly it really does not matter if your CPU is 30° or 50° in idle as long as the load temperatures are fine aswell.

Just run a CPU stresstest for like 30minutes, if the CPU stays below 85°C or possibly even 90°C everything is fine. (check on intels homepage for the TJMax, generally the CPU should stay at least 10°C below it)

@Nord or quote me if you want me to reply back. I don't necessarily check back or subscribe to every topic.

Amdahls law > multicore CPU.

Yea fair enough, I suppose I was just over worried, and wondering if I messed up, I haven't really had the chance to listen to it when I start stressing it, but today I managed to be in a more quiet place when the fan kicks on, and it does work (even though Ive had errors booting up saying the fan isnt working, eh.) so ill stop worrying so much about it. Plus I suppose I cant expect too much, I hadnt cared about the laptop for like 2 years, and finally decided to work on it, so if it does die, im not at too much of a loss lol.
