need help with RAM upgrade

If the laptop is sluggish, add an SSD. 8 GB RAM is more than enough for most laptops. Unless you want a RAM disk in which case, don't.

Are you doing something so RAM intensive but not cpu/gpu intensive that only adding RAM would drastically improve your performance? o_O

 

The thinner laptops are probabl at their maximum capacity already and can't be added to.

Check the manufacturer's website for the model. Some laptops are limited by their BIOS.
