Hey everyone,

I'm a bit lost right now. I'm a gamer and I want a good headset/headphone+mic where i want to spend around 100 euros on. I saw the Audio Technica M40X and it looks pretty good. Now here's my problem:

I really want some kind of surround sound because i like it( don't judge me) but i hear that "gaming" headsets don't have as good as a sound quality as headphones. So i'm like ok cool i'll buy some headphones who are ofc all stereo.

Well i know that 5.1/7.1 virtual surround sound headsets are actually stereo headsets with some software. So it must be possible to achieve surround sound on a headphone too right? I saw some sound cards who could do this kind of stuff but i want to know if it's worth the money and if yes what soundcard is the best (budget around 50 euro). I have the MSI H97 gaming 3 motherboard. Will i notice a significant boost in quality and surround? Or can i achieve something simalar with my motherboard?

Thank you very much in advance,

Gr,

Silvanor

Get a pair of open backs. Simulated surround sound in a headphone is garbage - this is mostly just my opinion as I don't have anything to show you that surround sound from two speakers (that should be enough anyways) is objectively bad.

When you have a pair of open backs, the sound stage is generally much larger than a pair of closed cans (which is what those M40Xs are).

most soundchips (alc 1150 for sure, or some custom sound softwares) have the possibility to do virtual surround on your headphone, just look into the audio driver of your on board soundchip, so you don´t need an soundcard for this.

the m40x´s are good, but i would never buy a gaming headset, if u aren´t on really low budget an really need that mic to be included, bc most of the times the mic is shit, and the headset cant compete with earphones of its pricerange from a sound perspektive.

maybe u can spend 30 dollars more on some dt 990 pros they are rly good open back headphones(wider soundstage, as if u were sitting in the middle of the room kinda)

or the m50x wich arent open back(better noise isolation, better base most of the times)

I might have misunderstood you but the m40x aren't gaming headsets right? So.... is that a good thing? Also i'll check what my onboard sound card can do

he wants to spend 100€ with a mic so the Clouds (one) are the best he can do. end of story.

They are not shit like some gaming branded headphones.

Also the m40x/50x are shit because they have a narrow AF soundstage. (Which means no good for gaming)

Okay thanks everyone for their replies but i don't see anyone talk about an soundcard to get surround sound on a stereo headphone. Is that because it's a bad idea or..?

exactly.
