1 - the CPU will bottleneck
2 - your CPU is overheating
3 - the 960 is horrible value and nobody should buy it. 480, 1060 or 380(X)
4 - your PSU is probably tosh as well

Save up for a new system.

You can still reuse your ram, HDD case and what not.

i5 2400 | ASUS RTX 4090 TUF OC | Seasonic 1200W Prime Gold | WD Green 120gb | WD Blue 1tb | some ram | a random case

Get a cooler like the Cooler Master 212 thing, and an AMD Athlon x4 860k. Will not bottleneck a gtx 960.

That's just wasting money. He should save up for an i3 + 480 if he wants value.

The 960 would get horribly bottlenecked by your overheating CPU

Save up for a new machine. An i3-6100 and a cheap skylake motherboard would be a better option for the 960 than even the 860K, unless you're playing games that absolutely require 4 cores to start. I have an i3-6100 cooled by an ID Cooling IS-25i (lower profile than even the AMD heatsinks) and it never goes over 60°C because it's a 37W part, even though it's in an ITX-sized case.

You can even buy used hardware.

Your CPU is bottlenecking

Fix that.

Your CPU is overheating

Fix that. or your house could set on fire.

Your life is at risk.

Fix that.

No, that is likely why it performs like shit. Overheating causes the clockspeed to drop to 800MHz

I built an A6 system, and let me tell you, that cpu isnt good at all for gaming, also those are doom to fail someday if you are running it at those temps, lower the clock speeds and get a better cooler like a hyper T4. I would recommend to just get a g3258 or an i3 and use that with the 960.

Current built PCs:

1: XFX DD  AMD R7 260x / AMD FX-6300 4.7ghz OC /  MSI 970A Krait edition mobo / Deepcool captain 120 AIO cooler / 10gb of 1866 ram???? / 750W evga psu  / 1TB Seagate 'Cuda + 16GB SSD /  packed into a Bitfenix Shadow  window

2: Intel G3258 3.5 GHZ OC / G1 gaming 4gb GTX960 / 8GB of Ram / 128GB A-data ssd/ misc gigabyte mobo / Alpine Pro rev2.0 cooler / 500W Seasonic PSU / in a Bitfenix Pandora Window

3: AMD A6-7400K 3.8 GHZ OC / Misc AM2+ Gigabyte mobo / Cooler master Hyper T2 Cooler / 1 TB Seagate 'Cuda / 8GB 1866 corsair vengeance pro RAM / XFX 500W psu / in a cougar spike case

4: Intel G3258 oc 4ghz / Random MSI mobo / 1TB seagate 'Cuda / Cooler master hyper T-4 / 8GB Fury X ram / 4GB Club 3D R9 380 / 500W EVGA psu / locked up in a thermaltake versa N21 window

5: AMD FX-6300 4.1OC / Cooler master T4 cooler / MSI 970A gaming motherboard / 1TB Western digital blue / 8GB Hyper X Ram / 500W Thermaltake PSU / 2GB XFX DD R9 280 / Bitfenix Nova window case

The odd laptop: Asus ROG GL552-VW / intel i7 skylake / GTX 960M 2GB / 1TB toshiba HDD / 128 GB A-data M.2 SSD
