Reliable Ssd?

Any recommendations of daily/weekly backup site/software?

I use the built in windows one and back up to my server which is another windows PC running 2012 essentials server with 4 drives in raid - this then backs up to amazon cloud

there are tons of cloud storage solutions

or get a cheap external drive or a cheap NAS ideally, some even come with good software, or you can use windows backup or something like achronis

I've never owned/used an ssd, and I'm kinda paranoid because I'm not really up to date with the best and worst ssds, what happens when an ssd fails etc. Apparently Intel ssds are pretty reliable. If so, should I go with them?

Follow up question, are HyperX Fury ssds reliable at all?

Nothing.

There is not such thing as "reliable" and if there is it does not make sense, there are better made SSD's and worse made SSD's,there are faster SSD's and slower SSD's,the word "reliable" only counts in on the company name and both Intel and Kingston are both reliable as companies

I'm a educated fool with money on my mind.

They say i got to learn but nobody here to teach me,if they can't understand it how can they reach me

Power and the money, money and the power, minute after minute, hour after hour

My Motivation

Yeah Intel SSDs are extremely reliable. They are what I'm going with to replace my shitty Corsair SSD.

Samsung has some interesting SSDs as well, though I'm not sure of their reliability. They have some of the fastest SSDs on the market, so they are definitely worth having a look at.

What type of form factor are you looking for? PCIe, SATA III, M.2? etc...

SSD's have come a long way in the last few years. I have found them to be extremely reliable, more so than mechanical drives even. However, when they fail, everything is gone, unlike a mech drive where you can generally recover some things.

As far as brands go, Intel (IMHO) is the most reliable, has the best warranty, but also generally costs considerably more. The Samsung's, and HyperX's are quite good (though I don't have any experience with these specific ones) and I have heard good things about Adata ones as well. Basically as long as you don't go with a Kingston v300 series, you're pretty golden.

When in doubt, re-format.

1. I've heard of a thing called "read only mode". What exactly is it? Isn't that a sort of message that your ssd is giving up and you can quickly recover?

2. Why exactly...

Nothing.

Really depends on what you're talking about... In terms of lifespan, modern SSDs are (generally) way better than HDDs ! At least from my experience and from a lot of tests I saw on the internet. But of course, if you keep an SSD long enough to see it die, you might lose everything. But who keeps personal data on an SSD ? I only have my OS and games on my SSD, nothing that can't be recovered.

CPU : i7 8700k @5GHz, GPU : ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX, RAM : 2x8Go 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance, MB : ASUS Prime Z370-A, PSU : CM V850, Case :  NZXT S340, CPU Cooler : NZXT Kraken x62, Monitor : Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 1440p 165Hz, OS : Windows 10 Home 64 bits

Yeah, "read only mode" is basically when it's dead. I hit that by accident when I copied a huge file to my SSD and that basically killed it. It did some writing in the OS but upon restarting it just undid all of the changes.

They are very reliable, physically hard to damage, and in terms of life span generally last hundreds of TB of writes, if not PB of write

Some manufacturers enable this mode that once the drive reaches a stupid amount of read/write cycles, it will lok itself to read only mode in order to not die altogether so you can retrieve data. I totally back this feature as the number of cycles will generally make the SSD outlive your system and the second one you put it into as well.

If it's in read only mode, what can you do?

Nothing.

You should have a data backup anyway

Nothing really, that's basically the end of the SSD's life. You're only truly able to really read from the SSD and unable to write to it.

Let me get this straight. Once the Ssd reaches read only mode, it's useless? Is there no way to backup after it's hit this state? If so, is there a way to know when this is coming?

Nothing.

Yes, there is a way to know when it's coming. SSDs, like HDDs, also show signs of S.M.A.R.T. status. These are basically signs to show when the drive is dying. Your system will prompt you of these signs.

Once it hits the "read only mode", you should be able to get some information off of it, but you will be unable to truly write to it.

Yep SMART

and you should have a daily/ weekly backup schedule anyway
