Question about connectors. Please Help!

Hey guys,

 

so I'm building a mini-Itx rig right now. My mainboard is the Gigabyte GA-Z97N-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0). For CPU power delivery the board has a EPS-12V connector port, but the power supply I got (BeQuiet! SFX Power 2 400W) only features a P4-ATX plug. I'm I still able to use the board without an adaptor? Just physically fitting it in is not a problem since the two plugs are essestially the same, with the EPS-12V beeing double the width of the P4-ATX. I'm using a i5 4690k as for my CPU, but I don't plan to overclock it as for now.

basically power delivery. theoretically it'll work. it might even work in practice, but it probably isn't safe (lack of a better word for it).

If the CPU (and mobo itself) doesn't get enough power it might not even turn on, and if it does, it'll be powerstarved and who knows how it might manifest. At the end of the day it's a question of stability.

 

You can just buy a 2xMolex to 8-pin cable, if that PSU is indeed enough to run the rig.

Well allright, I guess I'm just giong to buy another converter cable. Yes, the PSU is absolutely up to the task. It is a 400 Watt SFX unit from BeQuiet! with a 80plus Bronze efficiency rating that can provide up to 33 amps combined on the 12V rails. It just lacks the appropriate EPS-12V beacuse as far as I can judge most Mini-Itx boards only feature P4-ATX sockets. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Weird... The gist of this article basically is, that it is absolutely possible (whilst eventually not beeing 100% stable).

I go on a simple "better safe than sorry" principle when I give people advice. What I do/use for personal use is hit or miss because I generally tend to look at what can go wrong before I do something stupid
