what CPU are you planning to get?

your CPU uses the LGA 1155 socket, and unless you want to get an old, Ivy bridge CPU that uses the same socket, you will need to get a new motherboard.

any intel CPU starting with the number 2 or 3 uses the 1155 socket (you will not need to replace your motherboard to use those)

any intel CPU starting with the number 4 or 5 uses the 1150 socket (you will need to replace your motherboard to use those)

any intel CPU starting with the number 6 or 7 uses the 1151 socket (you will need to replace your motherboard and your RAM to use those)

You could also get an AMD CPU, in which case you will also need to swap your motherboard, and get a motherboard that fits.

Motherboard is what all of your components fit into:

Difference-Between-AT-and-ATX-Motherboar

replacing a CPU that starts with 4 or 5 with another CPU that starts with 4 or 5 is no big deal.

similarly, replacing a CPU that starts with 2 or 3 with another CPU that starts with 2 or 3 is no big deal.

however, if you want to upgrade from a cpu that starts with 4 to one that starts with 6, you will need a new motherboard and RAM

the socket a CPU goes into is what makes the difference.

2 & 3 series CPUs use the LGA 1155 socket, and are intercompatible

4 & 5 series CPUs use the LGA 1150 socket, and are intercompatible

6 & 7 series CPUs use the LGA 1151 socket, and are intercompatible

CPUs on the 1155 and 1150 sockets use DDR3 RAM, so you can keep your RAM sticks when switching between those sockets

CPUs on the 1151 sockets use DDR4 RAM, so you need to get new RAM when upgrading from any other socket

getting an i5 6600K will also require a new motherboard, and new DDR4 RAM

Ik so which kind of ram would I need?

I forgot to include that in my reply (brainfart)

scince the CPU you want to get is a 6 Series (skylake) on the 1151 socket, you need DDR4 RAM
