My own entry to the thread.

Westmere E5640.

I need a better cooler to get it to 4.6ghz, i had it at a max of 4.7ghz @ 1.42v, but for longer runs my cooler is not enough, will be buying a mounting kit for my spare Corsair H100 to crank it right up!

Lol, I have a Xeon E3-1231 v3 in my Alienware X51. Upgraded from an i3, going to an i5 wouldn't have been worth it and i7s (especially at the time) were too expensive. $250 for quad-core with hyperthreading Xeon was definitely an awesome choice!

The only reason I could find for not buying a Xeon is the lack of overclockability... Other than that the Xeons offer outstanding value for money...
