I have an old Dell desktop that iv'e been upgrading whenever possible and I want to get a new processor but I don't know what is compatible. The motherboard P/N is 0F896N and the service tag is 10RGQL1.

I know that the motherboard socket is AM2+ and that AM3 will also work and has a max of 95W. The processor i'm using is a AMD Athlon II X2 240 which is AM3 and 65W. I also already have a 600W power supply.

If anyone could tell me what is guaranteed to work it would be much help and much thanks

You can try and find a cheap phenom x4 off of ebay and that would be the best bet for you. However I would check if the motherboard even supports such a cpu.

I found a pretty sketchy website that says Phenom II X4 820, 840 is supported along with Athlon II X4 650, 645, 640, 635, 630, 620

Probably a 4. It's not an official dell site

Well technically the site does have a point since those am3 processors can also run with ddr2 memory. Personally I would get either the athlon x4 640 or (even better) the phenom x4 840. You'll definitely find either of these cheap off of ebay. Also on amazon the motherboard is listed and in its description they somewhat say what processors are supported : https://www.amazon.com/Inspiron-Socket-System-MotherBoard-0F896N/dp/B005EDDL4K
still a bit shady tho
Edit: And I also found this thread on the newegg forums from 2010

worth it to check it out
