Not worth it. You'll loose bug fixes and security updates. It only depends what is your purpose for this cpu? if it's gaming then don't sweat it unless you have a beastly gpu which you might be bottlenecking with that cpu

You must use the right bios for it. The newest versions don't support it anymore. Do your research on what bios version for your mobo works.

It is worth it (to me), look up some benchmarks of oc'd locked intel cpus from DigitalFoundry on youtube and decide for yourself if it's worth it to you. But also be careful, it can damage both your mobo (if it isn't a z170 socket) and your cpu since it isn't made for overclocking. And don't push it as far as people usually do with unlocked cpus

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

Digital Foundry and a few others found that the locked Skylake SKUs are binned very similar to the K models. My i3-6100 at 4.3GHz is also doing just fine.

Those bug fixes are minimal, the most you loose out on is from actually overclocking the chip, I forget what exactly it is but some are like per core thermal temps ect.

Bug fixes are never minimal, they fix issues that should be working and in some cases prevent hackers from hacking your system , as was the case with gigabyte's boards recently.

Nothing prevents hackers, that's a stupid fucking excuse lol

They will always find a way around anything, any company does to try and stop them.

Lol I know but a vulnerability that takes hackers only a little while to crack isn't good considering even amateurs can do it. Having security is a must.

Is there anyway that Gigabyte could send a new update and possibly rick my mobo?

Bios updates aren't like Windows updates.  The only way you end up with them is by choice.

There's something cool here - you just can't see it.

@Jumper118Had an i3-6100 at I think 5.1GHz, not for a 24/7 clock but plenty of people have had no problems with them 24/7 at 4.3-4.7GHz

Yeah I have an i5 6500, i3 6320,6100 and 3 g4400 that I have successfully overclocked using bclk.  All did over 5ghz on phase and they did over 4.2ghz on air with the best one doing 4.75ghz.  All you do is get the none k oc bios.  Msi and asrock boards are best for this and you can't really break anything by doing it.  I have tried 1.7v through all my cpus and upto 1.75v through my ddr4 and it all still works.  Ran ddr4 at 1.45v as daily volts and cpu at 1.4v on a big air cooler with no problems.

So i was wondering about overclocking myi5 6500. Even though it is not the 6600k, i have seen post about people downgrading the motherboard bios and being able to overclock the 6500. Is it worth it? Also is it possible this could somehow break the motherboard?

You can do it, but:

  1. You need a Z170 mobo.
  2. You lose AVX support
  3. You lose your iGPU
  4. You lose core temp readings
  5. Cache runs slower
  6. You lose all power saving features
  7. You must use an older bios, which means missing on fixes and features (unless yours has an option to select the microcode to be used, but very few actually support it)
  8. Windows can push an update at any time and screw your OC over. Nothing irreversible, and it's very unlikely to happen. But a pain noneless.

In sum, it's not recommended. You sure you still want it?
