Filter at load balancer

So I basically want to find a way to mitigate ddos on a web server, and adding more web servers just seems like a pain.

 

Would it be effective to filter out bots/traffic with several load balancers / reverse proxies? 

 

For example: 

Domain -> Cloudflare -> Reverse proxy 1, Reverse proxy 2, Reverse proxy 3 (all round robin) -> backend web server.
