Hey Guys. This is my first time posting in the forums. I just have a quick question.

NOTE : PLEASE do not fight in this post. I didn't post this so that you guys can duke it out with regards to your own opinions. Please be as constructive as possible in posting your comments so that we can learn things from each other.

Been using GTX 670 for the past 4 years. Currently decided to upgrade to a new GPU. But seeing that Vulkan / DX12 is the future, which card should I really go for?

Was thinking of getting a GTX 1070 (MSI or Palit) but seeing that it didn't gain any performance boost on the recent DOOM Vulkan patch, I began worrying. Then I immediately thought of RX 480 (was even willing to do a crossfire but considering that support for multi-gpu isn't all that great for the recent years, idk anymore. LOL).

I'm mainly gaming on a 1080p monitor. Have no plans (for 2 years, at least) to go on a higher res monitor. MIGHT get a high refresh rate but not too sure. I want to have constant 60 fps or higher (higher is more than welcome, ofcourse) in the stated resolution that I'm playing at. I pretty much play AAA titles most of the time with a side of DOTA 2, CS : GO, Dirty Bomb. Also looking forward to upcoming AAA games (BF1, Titanfall 2, and any upcoming games this year that will pique my interest). I have the budget for GTX 1070 or Crossfire RX 480, by the way.

PC Specs:

16gb G.Skill Ripjaws X 2133

i5-4690k (stock clocks)

Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5

Seasonic M12II 750w EVO Edition

So the question is :

Should I get the GTX 1070 (a little bit skeptical because of that Vulkan support. Not even sure if it will really go well in Vulkan), or just go for a single RX 480 or go for RX 480 Crossfire?

Thank you. And please do pardon my sentence construction. English isn't my first language.

The general rule of thumb is to get the single fastest GPU you can afford, which in this case would be the 1070. The 480's in Xfire would perform about the same as a 1070 in games that support multi GPU. You would be best with the 1070.

Agree with legacy99 ^

Get the 1070. I was making the same choice myself but then realized that not all games and software supported multiple GPUs in crossfire or SLI. This made up my mind. I would rather be able to play any games and use any software I like with no problems rather than not be able to because they don't support crossfire. It's a much safer option.

And judging by your build as well, you wont need more than a 1070, you'll be able to play most of the games on either Ultra or high settings for the next couple of years with no worries. Especially if you plan on keeping your 1080p monitor (Like me :) )

Id reccomend the 1070. Getting a multi gpu setup is almost never as good as a single card solution and nvidia is currently the best for high end single gpu solutions

Will the 1070 be supported by Vulkan in the near future?

Sorry guys. I just don't want to make a mistake in my purchase. Thank you.

Well my 980ti gains boost from vulcan (with min fps in doom) so it supports it now, but its not as drastic as it would be with amd cards

The other rule of thumb is to never buy a K series CPU unless you plan to OC it. There is another thread that comes to mind. Which card to get. A GTX 1070 and the cheapest one you can find.

Well...I bought this to OC it. Just not right now at least. The thing hasn't even reached 1 year of usage since I bought it. :)

AMD cards shine under the right circumstances, while Pascal has proven to be more consistent across the board. If it was down to cost alone, I would wait 5 days and see the difference between the 1060 and 480, and possibly consider the 1060 if 1080p 60FPS is all you are looking for.  The 1070 is almost overkill for 1080p currently (except for games like ARK lol), but in two years it might be a recommended requirement if the upgraded consoles have anything to say about it.
