Ok, I am having a weird problem. My primary computer is used mostly for gaming/video editing/VR with my HTC Vive specs are:

  • CPU - Intel i7-3770K with the stock cooler
  • Motherboard - ASUS P8Z68-V Pro Gen3
  • 16GB Ram
  • Nvidia GTX Titan 6GB referance card
  • Rosewill RBR1000-M 1000W Power Supply
  • a SanDisk 256GB SSD and 2x 2TB HDDs
  • Windows 10 64bit

My problems started a while after I switched out my old GTX 660Ti to the GTX Titan. I did this so that I could get better performance in Premier and to support the VR headset I bought shortly afterward(I now wish I had waited for the 1080). The install went perfectly, with the only hitch being I had to rearrange all the hard drives so that my power supply cables would reach. But after a couple of weeks I was playing Battlefield Hardline when all of my screens went black and all of the Fans went to full on. I have never heard the computer be so loud. Figuring that it had overheated and shut itself off, I took the side panel off and left it running while I went to lunch. When I got back almost 45min later it was in the same state. Powering it off and back on it came back up and started working normally like nothing had happened and I proceed to play battlefield for several more hours with no issues. It has happened 2 more times now, it only happens when I play Battlefield 4 or Hardline. What I don't understand is why those games trigger it when I have have had zero issues using the exact same rig for VR. Is Battlefield more power consuming than VR?

I'm not sure how to proceed, should I look into better cooling? I don't have room or the desire to water cool, but I am only using stock fans. I have 2 in the case, one intake at the back and one on the top blowing out. The CPU and GPU both have the stock coolers on them and the power supply has a couple fans in it as well. This has been enough for me in the past, but I also had a smaller graphics card before this started happening.

definitely seems to be over heating...

is it OC? if yes deactivate it and try playing battle feild again to see if it happens again

****SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH IT'S REALLY TERRIBLE*****

Been married to my wife for 3 years now! Yay!

I don't believe it is. I don't know much about how overclocking works so I haven't tried, but I did buy the card used so if they overclocked it could it still be?(again I don't really know how OC works)

Go into the GPU drivers. If it's OC'd, "reset to default". Run both gpu and cpu benchmarks and tell us the temps.

i would recmend cinebench and chouse the OpenGL in advanced options

Cinebench not bad either but that renders a scene in openGL and that's not really heavy. Furmark simulates a REALLY GPU heavy game, kinda. Furmark is a stress test.

Cinebench is a great software to bench CPU's

CPU-Z is also a option and alows for indefinite stress tests, great is you want to test your OC

i fact i use both of the programs for testing old hardware to see if it can handle a modern task maost tasks today would be like playing a high end game back when the CPU was new

Ok, here is the preliminary results from Cinebench with the specs from CPU-Z on the CPU and GPU I am running benchmarks in CPU-Z now

Please do a furmark test on max settings. If temp goes over 90-100C then your gpu might be overheating. I highly doubt that BF4 is that heavy though.

Ok, I think I found something, I downloaded CPUID HWMonitor and the core temps on the CPU are high.

So I guess I need a better cooling solution...

I suggest a corsair h55. It's £50, easy to install and keeps my temps around room temp. It's a liquid cooler so no water refilling necessary. I highly recommend it for cpu cooling.
