A lot of times the worst that can happen is you'll end up with a stick that's DOA or something that fails prematurely. Neither outcome would really result in any data loss or anything so buying cheap stuff isn't the end of the world. A lot of times it can run well for a long time.

As Linus says, "Ram is Ram." As long as you buy from a reputable brand and are fine with the color and speed you should be fine. I have seen most of the manufactures have life time warranties on ram, so you are covered for a long time. Just make sure you are not getting under 1333mhz on DDR3.
