A long time ago, I bought all 3 Max Payne games and I've only got round to playing them. It makes sense to start with the first one, so I download it from Steam and go to launch it in Windows 8, doesn't work. Compatibility mode in Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME and XP. Doesn't work, just nothing happens.

I then create a Virtual Machine of Windows XP, install steam and AMD Drivers and go to launch it, I get an error message:

"Max Payne requires a DirectX 8 compatible display adapter. Please consult the troubleshooting readme in the installation folder"

I follow them instructions, and of course it gives me a bunch of drivers for VERY old graphics cards.

So, I go onto the internet and go to install DirectX 8, I do so and the same error message comes up. Same with compatibility modes of all kind.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix it, weather I am running it off of Windows 8 or Windows XP?

no not really

games in particular have trouble running in a virtual machine

it is possible but tricky

I've done it before, even Max Payne in particular, but It didn't give me this issue. I'm using the same installation disc, the same VM software but suddenly I get these error messages
