Raspberry Pi and mini LCDs

(I did not know which forum to pick)

 

I yet do not own a Pi but I'm thinking of getting one with a small touch screen.

 

I was checking ebay for prices and noticed that some LCDs include a so called "HDMI/VGA/2AV+Reversing Driver board"

After checking around for a while I noticed that it seems that the board is only included on LCDs with 7-inch or more

 

Why is this? Why do I need the board and don't I need it for smaller LCDs?

I'd prefer without since I'm planning on making a 3D printed case for it and the board would be so bulky.
