So I'm am making a big switch. I'm breaking up with amd to join intel. I'm a heavy gamer and I also photo edit. I do not do video editing and I do not stream. I'm looking for a budget but beastly looking build. My current color scheme is red and black. I really like msi so this is what I was thinking. I was going to get the msi z170 gaming m5 paired with the core i5 6600k. Sound good or is there something better for around the same price. Does not have to be msi but I'm trying to keep my red and black scheme.

The motherboard will do just fine but the CPU might be limiting depending on the type of photo editing you make, the GPU you want/have, and the games you play. In CPU intensive games such as GTA V, Cities Skylines, Vermintide, Total War Warhammer or Dying Light, the i5 might struggle to keep up with your GPU if it's beefy enough. It will not impact drastically your average framerates but your minimum framerate can suffer with the i5.

CPU : i7 8700k @5GHz, GPU : ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX, RAM : 2x8Go 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance, MB : ASUS Prime Z370-A, PSU : CM V850, Case :  NZXT S340, CPU Cooler : NZXT Kraken x62, Monitor : Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 1440p 165Hz, OS : Windows 10 Home 64 bits

Okay then what would you recommend cpu wise. I'm not trying to break my bank lol.

I have used to 6600K for games and it runs them well as most games don't use more than 4 cores at the moment. It will also be good for photo editing as long as you are not doing really heavy work. If you got an AIO liquid cooler or a good air cooled heat sync you could overclock it to get better performance for the money, but if you would spend that much on a heat sync it would probably be better to go to an i7-6700 OEM and a cheap heat sync (something along the lines of the hyper 212 evo / X). What GPU would you be going for as that has a bigger in games than the CPU.

Right now imy running the msi r9 390. I just bought it so I have no intention of replacing that for at least a while. With the release of the rx 480 it's probably going to be hard to sell it to make anything back really.

Here is a PC part picker list with the hardware which you have. This would be good for gaming, but you may need to get an extra case fan or two. Take away the bits you already have on the list.

I appreciate you help. I do have a full set up right now with an AIO liquid cooler. I have the corsair h110i. All I would need is mobo cpu and ram.

In that case, it will be good to get an i5-6600K and the K3 mobo with some 2400MHz RAM or something similar unless you want to overclock more, in which case go for a higher end mobo which overclocks better like the MSI Z170A Gaming PRO.

For overclock I would definitely recommend either a Asrock Z170 Extreme or Fatal1ty. Of course the ultimate being OC-Formula, but thats if he's really into overclock.

Basically Asrock got known by its crazy overclock world records and very solid boards running with heavy overclocks.

Too be clear I like overclocking but I tend to just use a mild one. I'm still new to the scene
