So I would like to buy a pair of headphones. I've been looking at the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x and the ATH-M30x. I'm on a budget and so would like to know what the main differences between them are. (So I can decided which one to buy, as  I also want to buy a mic). Maybe there are other headphones around the same price range that are better that I haven't come across... Any suggestions or advice? Please tell me, it is very much appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Quick google gives this:

Quote

Impedance: The Audio-Technica ATH-M30x has a higher impedance and needs more power to produce higher volumes. Very high impedance headphones are best used with amps.

Frequency Response: Both headphones have the same bass frequency limit, but the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x can output higher treble pitches. For context, human ears can hear around 20Hz - 20kHz, with that range shrinking with age.

Operating Principle: Both of these headphones have closed system operating principles which work well for bass heavy music.

I personally have a pair of ATH M30X, and have had no reason to complain, but my friend tells me it "doesn't feel right" on his head.

lol and google is wrong, impedance aka ohm does not really matter 600 ohm headphones can be harder to drive than 32 ohm headphones.

OP maybe give the pinned post a look and find out what kind of sound signature that you like + budget.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

My main Headphones and IEMs:  K612 pro, HD 25 and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor, HD 580 with HD 600 grills

DAC and AMP: RME ADI 2 DAC

Speakers: Genelec 8040, System Audio SA205

Receiver: Denon AVR-1612

Desktop: R7 1700, GTX 1080  RX 580 8GB and other stuff

Laptop: ThinkPad P50: i7 6820HQ, M2000M. ThinkPad T420s: i7 2640M, NVS 4200M
