How does Microsoft know when to start the 1 year warranty period for surface devices, for example let's say I bought a service book, when does the warranty period start? Is it as soon as I turn on the device?

I would assume it is from purchase date/day received (if you ordered it online) not 100% certain on that though

Yes. Mine starts around the same period, and I bought mine from John Lewis.

I disagree. Had mine fixed/replaced with a new one within 2 weeks. Collection and postage all handled by Microsoft. But services could vary between different region.
