I made a post a while back asking for help on my first build for about $1200-1300ish USD and I was given a good list of parts on PC Parts Picker. I'm back again since I will be building the computer very soon and I want to make sure that the parts on the original build are the best I can get.

Here is the original build: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/daviden/saved/#view=Y6sdnQ

So you need a new display with it?

that 1080p display is a horrible purchase, I don't know why it's available for $270

are you just gaming with it?

You'll want to wait until tomorrow to get the RX 480 with a high end display most likely if you need a new display

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Yes I do need a display with it, I will pretty much just be gaming and watching youtube. Is this RX 480 being launched tomorrow or something?

Yuup, at minimum it should be a 390 for around $200/250 at half the power usage, one sec, the other build is missing a display

So at $200 ish for the display you have the option of 1080p 144hz TN free-sync or a korean 1440p 60hz IPS display, you'd want 144hz for gaming even if it doesn't have the color reproduction of 1440p

390 is just a place holder for the RX 480 8GB

still some room in the budget if you want a bit nicer motherboard/case or maybe a 750W PSU if you even want to give running 2 GPUs a try, but that won't exactly be needed for 1080p gaming, just for 4k or 1440p 144hz

Otherwise if you wanted a better CPU for whatever reason, jump to X99, I wouldn't buy a 6700K, as the non K part here already turbos to 4ghz, so you really won't get too much faster with the 6700K in all likely hood

The biggest improvement is the gpu...a 1070 is much better than the 970 and the r9 390... Also most likely will be nearly double the performance of the rx480 but that's speculation based on leaked data so who actually knows how the rx480 performs(we'll find out tomorrow)

i didnt know you needed a monitor as well...

an i7 would be absolute overkill for a gaming and web browsing pc

the i5-6600k on a z170 board would be much better imo

It's about the same price for the 8 thread CPU at 4Ghz turbo vs the pure quad core at probably 4.5ghz in the end

I'd take the i7 for sure over the i5 with the higher end motherboard, as you'd never really need to replace the i7, and most of the features on the higher end board would go to waste

From what I've heard, I7s are unnecessary for gaming

Most games today use 4 threads

DX12 is going to change that a fair amount, and if the cost is the same the 8 thread CPU will never really need to be replaced, even if the i5 is slightly faster per core once OC'd

ya that makes sence, so basically take everything from what you gave me and replace the cpu/MB with the i7 set up?

What do you mean?

I just posted a list of what should be about the best performance per dollar parts

And you'd still have some budget for slight upgrades in places, and have to decide on 1080p 144hz TN or 1440p 60hz IPS

Although the 1080p display will be new and have a warranty and shit, probably just get that anyways for pure gaming, I'm going to be getting one soon I think, the only major complaint I think was that it's a very bright display

Like StreetGuru said, DX 12 is starting to change the game in terms of CPU usage. It may be a slow change but non the less it is changing. See below of PC world article on thread usage for Ashes of the Singularity

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3039552/hardware/tested-how-many-cpu-cores-you-really-need-for-directx-12-gaming.html

I've had an i7 920 OC and I currently use an i7 3960X. My brother bought my old computer with the i7 920 in it which was released in Q4 of 2008. It's showing it's age but it still holds together quite well with it's OC ( I dont remember what it is. 4.2 GHz or something). Mine was released Q4 2011 and deffently doesn't have problems keeping up. It's not the fastest thing around but it gets the job done. it's faster than all my friends CPU's at least lol. yes I know the price points are quite different between my two examples and the build in question, but this is my long winded way of saying getting a more powerful or hyperthreaded CPU is always a good idea. It does allow you to wait to upgrade if you don't have the cash later. And if they are the same price or comparable, bonus.

So streetguru's list has a harddrive and an ssd, I was thinking I could get one 500GB ssd, instead of the 240GB ssd and a 1TB harddrive together

If you don't need the extra space

Mushkin ECO3 480gb is about $115 overall the mushkin one should be fine, and it even has an onboard 512MB cache

Otherwise the default option is the 850 Evo/Pro at $155+
