Do decent mini itx boards such as an Asus z170 motherboard last as long as similarly priced atx boards? If it really makes a difference in life span I would be fine going with a micro atx.

well yeah ... I don't know why would mini itx board die faster. They tend to have less functions and additional crap, that could acctually fail.

So if you are only worried about life span, it's the same as any other motherboard.

But it's also about luck. It might last you for 10 years, or it might die after 1 year. But you have warranty for 3 years probbably :)

Why wouldn't they last as long? The only way in which mITX boards are generally inferior to larger boards is PCIe and memory slots.

Main Gaming Rig:

Spoiler

Core i7-4770, Cryorig M9i Cooler, ASUS B85M GAMER, 8GB HyperX Fury Red 2x4GB 1866MHz, KFA2 GTX 970 Infin8 Black Edition "4GB", 1TB Seagate SSHD, 256GB Crucial m4 SSD, 60GB Corsair SSD for Kerbal and game servers, Thermaltake Core V21 Case, EVGA SuperNOVA 650W G2.

Secondary PC:

Spoiler

i5-2500k OCed, Raijintek Themis, Intel Z77GA-70K, 8GB HyperX Genesis in grey, GTX 750 Ti, Gamemax Falcon case.

I never had any kind of MB die on me except one for power surge and 2 because of bad caps, really... unless it's some kind of defect out of the box it's not like it'll die anytime soon.

Thanks for the help, do you guys think it would be a good idea just to go with a micro itx instead for more pcie slots since then I can actually add stuff to the pc like a thunderbolt 3 connection, the extra size doesn't really matter since I'm probably gonna make a custom case anyway even the mini itx cases like the BitFenix prodigy are too big for my Lan party pc needs

Oops sorry yeah, damn it auto correct, I'm using swiftkey and it's like my first time typing micro atx but I've been researching a ton of stuff on mini itx so that's probably why that happened. Also, dont judge me for using a phone on here.
