Basically, I want to upgrade my CPU and I am stuck between the I5 6600K and the I7 4790K. Now I am aware that on paper the I7 is obviously better, however in-game it does not make much of a difference, well in most games at least. However outside of games it is better in most areas, and if I can get it for the same price/cheaper/about the same, should I go with the I7 or the I5?

Right now I have the 6600K in my mind because it forces me to upgrade to a better RAM, DDR4 of course which future proof's it I guess? And instead of some crappy motherboard, well I think it isn't crappy since it is more expensive, I will have one that has more features and what not, so further future proofing it, plus a better socket. The 66600K is also a newer CPU so I guess that is a plus.

Currently I am rocking an A8 6600K which is just....nono so as you can see, the upgrade is pretty needed. If I buy the I7, I will need to get the CPU, Mobo and Cooler, if I get the I5, I have to add RAM to that list.

Also a big note, are the motherboards I picked out good or is there better in the range? I am kinda tight and do not want to spend a ton on a motherboard, but if it is a necessity I guess I can splash out more.

I5-6600K = https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Z170-PRO-Intel-Motherboard...

I7-4970K = http://www.cclonline.com/product/172888/90-MXGVH0-A0UAY...

The cooler will probably be Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Sorry for the constant rambling, no idea if I made any sense since I tend to go off topic on threads like these, so if you have any doubts I am down to answer them of course, thank you all in advance :)

Go with the Xeon 1231v3 it's the best of both worlds, performance similar to the i7 (even has 4 cores and 8 threads) but priced similarly to the i5 (~$230 US).

Mostly gaming. I might do like a small bit of videos if I get like a CSGO highlight or something, might edit and upload but that does not happen often. Just gaming and browsing indeed. I plan to run 2 monitors soon too, one being a 144hz for CSGO so getting 144fps stable on it is crucial.

Mostly play games like CSGO, Arma 2, H1Z1, Rust, Rocket League, GTA 5 and that's about it, other randoms here and there. Resolutions of 1680x1080 or 1440x900.

With games slowly taking better advantage of more cores and the i7 6700K performing significantly better than the i5 6600K when both are paired with a high-end graphics card, my recommendation is:

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

It costs as much as an i5 6600K (actually $10 more) and is basically an i7-4790 (no K). It will let you use your RAM (and RAM speeds aren't that important, they start mattering only once you shove a high end graphics card in there).

Wait will the I7-4790K let me use my RAM? DDR3 or does it need DDR4 too?

The i7 will let you use your RAM, yeah. I was proposing the Xeon as a cheaper alternative that's still 8 logical cores.
