Hi everyone,

I have just acquired this server for home use and was wondering if anyone recognizes the case at all? I am trying to mount some hard drives but can only find spots for 4 drives sitting on their side which seems quite odd to me. I have attached a few pictures in hopes of finding out any information. I can supply more pictures if needed.

Its a tyan thunder mainboard with 16gb ecc ram and dual AMD opterons @2ghz i think. Good for FreeNAS?

Freenas would work, but a server like that is better left scrapped. It will use way too much power for how much it's worth.

My native language is C++

This could be a custom server because it does look to be atx form factor, and is missing most of the proprietary features that are usually found in servers such as the cable management .

It should work fine for freenas, I would remove the second cpu, and the gpu (use onboard vga) to cut down on power costs since freenas isn't too demanding,  but it looks to have 16gb of ddr3 ecc, but that is definitely not the stock psu( sleeving, and cable lengths aren't right) getting a more reliable one would be necessary if you have this running 24/7.

what amd cpu does it have i looked at a bunch for freenas well for plex and most of them are crap . if the cpu is older then 4 years or so . if its useing standard atx MB and psu you can use it still if not its trash . no 24pin power/4/8pin eps its trash then . yes you can use it for freenas just check the server info once you find it to see if anyone else got same model working or if they had issues. it has no SAS backplane right ?. you can fit more hard drives in if you removed the unneeded stuff and DIY mount them

Thanks for the replies guys. So a change if psu, remove 1 cpu and gpu and it should be OK?

I also have an Intel atx? (Seems bigger) server board S3200SH with an Intel quad core q6600 and 6gigs of ram using a standard atx psu in a antec large case possible server case because it has trays to "slot" load 6 hard drives. Would this be better suited for Freenas?
