So I'm building a new pc but not sure what to put in it. This pc has to last me at least 3-4 years. I'm not in a hurry though and I can wait. Should I get a gtx 1080(or 1070) and a 6700k or should I wait for Volta gpus(Nvidia fan boy so don't bother with amd recommendations please) and whatever CPUs are out then? Budget is like 1500 usd by the way. Thanks in advance.

i would highly recommend you change your fanboy status because unless you really really need some nvidia feature that is going to end up costing you money for no good reason. but this will depend on how long you can wait i would recommend waiting for vega release because even if you dont buy a vega card it can drop nvidia prices and I would recommend at least waiting for the stocking issues of the 1080 and 1070 to go away

and if you are video editing or doing some other cpu intensive work the 6700k is good. if you are just gaming its really not worth it so get an i5 and if you are overclocking get the k version or else get the normal version

Dude... Volta will launch in 2018... If you want to wait then be my guest.

As for whether will you need a 1070 or 1080, it completely up to you, or rather what resolution are you going to game on. Both of them is overkill for 1080p, 1070 fit perfectly for 1440p and 1080p barely touch the 4k sweetspot.

For $1500 you can pretty much get a really decent computer. For example this will be overkill in the CPU/RAM part, but for even less than $1300

If you go down a notch for a 6700k instead then with a 1080 it will still be within $1500 range for sure.

The problem I'm having is that I'm not going to be able to add money to a pc budget because I'm a kid and can't really get a job at my age, long story on how I'm getting the money in the first place,  this also means that I'm gonna have trouble replacing parts like a CPU or a gpu later on. I definitely don't need the 1080 but there's something wrong with me and I can't seem to deal with the thought of not having the best for my money. I can wait for Volta but now sure if it's worth the wait, and if my current computer dies I will be without a computer until Volta since I will definitely not buy a gpu like a 1080 after waiting for a year and a just a few months before the next gen. Do you think Volta will have a big enough performance improvement to he worth it?

I actually do need some features that only Nvidia offers and I'm also gonna get an Intel CPU so the thought of using amd gpu with Intel CPU will totally kill me amd my ocd(not actually diagnosed but am pretty sure I have it no joke).

its probably not worth it to wait for volta but might be to wait for vega and depending on your cpu needs the 5820k the other person recommended probably isnt necessary for a kid

ok but there is no issue with using an amd gpu with an intel cpu in fact intel and amd probably has a better relationship regarding gpus

As I said before it's not because it doesn't work well it's because I have a hard time even knowing that competitors are working together in a build, I also wouldn't put an amd CPU with a nvidia card.

Well I'm planning on doing some high end gaming like the Witcher 3 and far cry primal and I know those need higher end gpus and I understand that a 1080 will be overkill especially if I'm only playing at like 1080p(looking into getting a 1440p monitor though).  Do you think it would be a better idea to get a 1070 since that will most likely be just fine for me and just upgrade when Volta comes out with the money I saved + any money I can get by selling the 1070?

yes the 1070 should work fine with the games mentioned at 1440p

I'm probably just being unreasonable but thanks for not being one of those guys that force other people onto their own preferences.

I guess I will do that then since a 1070 will be fine for what I want to do(not just doing gaming by the way also need to be able to edit videos) and it has comparable performance of a Titan x which should be more than enough. This also leaves me some cash to upgrade in the future whether my gpu ends up dying or just starts slowing down. Not really worried about the rest of the pc dying since CPUs last quite a long time and they don't impact performance too much. The mobo psu and ram should easily last me until I am graduated and able to get a job which will allow me to get a whole new pc.  Thanks for your help!

Oh and also some suggestion for a monitor and keyboard, I'm building a whole new setup, my budget for the whole thing is around 1600 and I would like some room for a future Volta gpu upgrade.
