Absent display, please help

Hey all :)

My friend was working on a graduation project on his pc, but when he connected an audio cable the display suddenly turned black (no signal) although the PC was still running. A manual restart didn't solve the problem.

He has an AMD 7850 and an old AMD cpu (he can't recall it's full name) that doesn't have an iGPU. He knows another person with the same GPU (the 7850) who's facing the exact same problem.

 

What can he do to solve the problem without losing progress on the project ?

can this be caused by a new driver possibly killing the GPU ? (btw I have the latest driver and my r9 390 is fine)
