I am looking for some advice / insight, a friend of mine dropped his PC yesterday while rearranging his room :( Now it won't post at all. Specs are as follows-

AMD A8-385 Llano 2.9Ghz (not sure what the exact OC is) HD6550 built in GPU

Zalman 9700 CPU Cooler

Thermaltake 850Watt PSU

2x Sapphire 6950 2Gb. (CrossfireX)

2x WD 1Tb. HDD's

16Gb. Kingston HyperX 1600

ASUS F1A75-V EVO Mothrerboard

NZXT Phantom 820 Full Tower (White)

I have swapped both GPU's around & by themselves as primary cards, in each individual PCI-E slot. As well as trying all those configs. with 1 of 4 sticks of RAM in each DIMM slot just to be sure, and still no post...I tried just the regular HDMI slot on the motherboard for the onboard GPU and still nothing. Tested both GPU's in my PC & worked no problem, as well as the RAM, which passed MEM test just to be safe.

I know it's a VERY sad thing to drop a computer, but accidents do happen & I'm just trying to help a friend out. I can't see any actual damage to the motherboard itself, but I'm thinking that the motherboard/socket was damaged in the fall. Other than that I can't think of what it would be to cause a no post, everything turns on, lights, fans, GPU fans, HDD's are spinning, & CPU cooler fan. Any insight or thoughts that you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated, and if I'm missing any details just let me know & I'll post em. Thanks for your time & I hope to hear from you soon :)

No nothing, no beeps & there aren't any LED indicators on the Motherboard to say what kind of error either. Everything turns on as it normally should as far as I can tell, just no display at all. So I can't tell if it's posting or not, but I thought it strange that when I hooked up the HDMI to the on-board graphics still nothing :(

Have you tried booting the computer without his gpu's installed? The cpu has on board graphics that could handle the initial boot.

The cpu heatsink is also a fairly hefty freely suspended part that can torque on the motherboard with a sudden drop.

In most cases I've found HDD's get hurt the most with a fall but they usually click afterwards.

I'd suggest trying to turn your computer into a testing rig. swapping out everthing from his to try and check all components. I know you tried the gpu and the ram, but try the hdd's, and power supply.

You might find by removing an tearing his pc down to the bare parts something simple as a cable came loose.

If you find you have his entire computer running off of your motherboard and cpu, then it might be possible that his motherboard has become damaged in the fall and needs to be replaced. If possible try to swap his cpu with yours if they are compatible boards. remove and re-seat his cpu as well.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Check all your connections and cables to all components, i had a small problem after having taken my computer on a flight, the baggage people don't care and it shook and moved some of the connections / cables.

so try making sure all power and SATA cables are in proper, and components clicked into place.

if this fails something serious has been damaged, might be the hard drives, alway can try a different hard drive or power supply...

just an idea

got to love Asus components

3 heavy components

CPU Cooler

GPU's

PSU

CPU Cooler might have damaged the MOBO

GPU's might have been damaged or damaged the MOBO

PSU might have taken some damage from the fall

Besides, both the harddisks are probably half-dead now, he should take a backup of them ASAP

Only thing he can do = Test every component on a working PC to find the culprit.

Ya I have tried that, thus far ran a MEM test on the RAM=passed, tried both GPU's & they work, & used his primary HDD & that worked too. This was all done by swapping his components into my PC, the PSU I don't have a tester & my DMM (Digital MulitMeter) is busted so I can't test the power supply. So it's either the PSU of Mobo. I did however plan on upgrading to an i7 so I just went ahead & ordered the new CPU/mobo & he's going to buy my old 1. So from there we will be able to determine for sure if it's the PSU of not. I would have just swapped power supplies but I have a custom water cooling loop, and LED's and a bunch of controlers that would be a PAIN in the A** to switch out :) Plus if it is bad, I would HATE for it to damage my components :) The delivery is set for tomorrow so I'll post back once I start swapping thing out & go from there. Thanks :)

Thank you all for your help and advice, ordered myself a new i7 & mobo that will be here tomorrow & he's going to buy my current setup. So from there I'll be able to determine if its the mobo or PSU, becasue everything has been tested & seems ok. Thank you all again & I'll post back once I swap things out.

My bet is that the fall wreaked havoc on the motherboard. Everything will most likely work perfectly fine as soon as he buys yours :).

I don't think the PSU took damage from the fall, but you never know...

Ya that's what I'm thinking, but like you said, you never know. Either way though I'll find out tomorrow once I get my new goodies, looking forward to some new gear :) Hopefully all goes well & I'll post back tomorrow. Thx again

Update. Got my new i7 3770k and mobo yesterday so I installed my FX-8120 and AsRock Fatality Pro into his case and all is well. When I took of his CPU cooler the CPU fell out of the socket with brokens pins :( Totally forgot to try and reseat the CPU, would have answered my question right off the bat. But oh well, thx for all the help and advice, and now I just have to start overclocking my 3770k. So far very happy with it. Thanks again.
