Bit of a newbie question here. If i have an i5 6600k and want to swap it for a i7 6700k , is it as simple as taking out the old one and dropping in the new one ?

Obviously cleaning and reapplying the paste etc...but bedsides the basics. I wouldn't be changing the mobo etc, just the cpu ?

Yup, just grab the cooler and give it a good yank, toss the old CPU in the trash, slap the new one in haphazardly, start up your machine, and you're off to the races.

I don't think one would simply throw away a 6600k. Could easily pick up like $100-$160 on ebay.

yea i,m not sure haphazardly is the recommended method lol. and i wouldn't be throwing it in the trash. But the answer is its just a simple case of swapping them over , no reinstalling reformatting etc etc needed ? is that right ?

Yeah, it's as simple as plugging the new one in. When you boot into Windows, it'll automatically install the appropriate drivers, and then you're good to go.
