Go to solution Solved by vanished,

Wow, I don't know what you're doing, but that'll do it! :P

Tomorrow marks the start of me putting my new PC build together. I bought it to be able to tackle everything and then some. (WARNING: I know and fully understand this is completely overkill! I intended on it being very overkill.)

  • i7 6850k (Going to overclock, not sure how much yet)
  • 64GB of DDR4 2400 MHz RAM
  • Asus X99 Deluxe II Motherboard
  • 2x Asus GTX 1080 Strix OC'd in SLI
  • 1TB M.2 SSD + 5TB WD Black HDD
  • 1200w Gold Certified PSU
  • Corsair 750D Airflow edition case
  • Corsair H110i GTX CPU cooler

I also ordered a new monitor (Asus 28" 4k monitor) and a razer blackwidow keyboard. I already had a Razer Mamba 2012 mouse. Tomorrow I get the case and processor in, and whenever overclockers gets some more gtx 1080s in they will fullfill my pre-order I had.

Wow, I don't know what you're doing, but that'll do it! :P

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Why 28" 4K? It's not big enough for running this kind of resolution unscaled. With the rest of build, this display is like taking a big stinky dump on it. Should've bought something like LG 31MU97C (the one LTT is using since moving to new offices). Or 1440p UW or just regular 1440. To see this 4K properly, you'll most likely have to use 150% scale, which is exactly like using 1440p, with a bit more pixels.

With my current living area, 28" is too large for where it has to sit. Anything even an inch bigger and I'd have to use it on the floor.

And you couldn't invest some of this wasted money (e.g. second gpu) on upgrading your desk setup to fit a larger display?

Would have done that, if it were that easy. Where I'm living I cant add any new furniture. I have plans on moving later this year, but until then I'm stuck where I am physically. And as for wasted money, I highly disagree. With one 1080 alone at 4k on maxed settings your hard pressed to reach 50 fps. I plan on going for the full 60 at least for now.

I see. This sucks.

According to benchmarks, SLI is a huge gamble and doesn't really seem to be worth it. It scales well in some games, but you might see next to none improvement in others. With 4K, you might still have to turn down settings in some games if you want to get 60fps. Although I started following PC scene in the beginning of this year, still can't understand this "all settings maxed and 60fps or it's unplayable" mentality. IMO anything >30fps is playable and not having max details won't cause sudden death.

It's more for my game development. When I go through and start rendering map layouts at 4k resolutions, if the game preview is not at 60fps or above it it has a high chance of crashing. When I move, I have plans of selling this monitor to my cousin and getting a nicer one lol

Why would it crash <60fps? Sounds like bad design, more than anything else.

Also, imagine how average player will experience the game if a single (currently) flagship gpu isn't enough to run the game.

It's a really weird glitch I've noticed in Unreal engine, although it seems to only be when its not compiled. If I compile it, it runs fine at anything above 30, but if Im editing the map or working on anything and I attempt to preview it before compiling, it quits out at anything less.

Didn't know about that. I've usually worked with unity or custom engines, never found the time to try UE more than just to see how it looks and work.

Hi :)

The build looks quite powerful! It should suffice for your needs.

One note for the storage: I really like the combination between a SSD and that WD Black. I understand that you will be doing quite some work on that PC. It would be a good idea to consider some level of redundancy or a full backup. I would consider either a RAID1 array in the case for redundancy (in case the drive fails) or an external drive for full backups of your important data. 5TB is quite a lot to lose if something happens with the WD Black so I'd consider a backup plan. :)

Post back if you need some suggestions! Also, post your build when you are done so we can check it out :)

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually had some plans on doing that. My next purchase down the line was going to be more storage for something like a RAID1. Maybe my next big paycheck ;D

As soon as I'm done, I'll be posting pictures of the build. If all goes well tonight, I'll be mostly building it (Except the gpus sadly, I'll throw in my old gtx 650 as a very temporary solution) and post some pictures and benchmarks.

When it comes to overclocking, it's something I've never actually done before. What are some recommendations on that if you don't mind?

Unfortunately, as a Western Digital representative I can't really give you any specific recommendations, but you can to a few things:
- There's a lot of good information online on how to OC any specific CPU model and what are the ups and downs of it.

- Linus has a good video on this.

- Contacting the manufacturer of the CPU can also prove to be useful as the guys there may give you some good tips on how to do it.

- The CPU section should also have quite a lot of info on OCing.

Regarding the storage, you could consider getting two smaller HDDs so you don't have "all your eggs in one basket" without a backup, sort to say. If you believe that the data there isn't that critical then the 5TB WD Black should be a great solution for you. Otherwise you could opt for two smaller versions. :)
