Linux File Server

I was wondering what the best version of Linux would be to create a said file server. Would Ubuntu 16.04 work. I have an old PC running Windows XP. Is there any possibility that this could be used as a file server with remote access.

I thought i could use Kodi, Plex or Emby but none of these are supported. Any Ideas?

Depends what the purpose of the server is. You wanting it for general file storage or as a media library and streaming server?

Media Server and Streaming System.

Also Plex server is supported on Linux and you can use any web browser to stream the videos. As for Kodi and Emby no idea don't use them.

So i am thinking create a partition and run Ubuntu off it. Then install Plex.

Of course.  I used to do the same thing with a 486.  I use slackware, but you could use Ubuntu.  You really should have some Unix admin knowledge before you do this.  Maybe build a machine with your old parts and start learning?  I wouldn't suggest partitioning at all.
